About the Author
Herbert F. Ziegler is an associate professor of history at the University of Hawai'i. He has taught world history since 1980 and currently serves as director of the world history program at the University of Hawai'i. He also serves as book review editor of the Journal of World History. His interest in twentieth-century European social and political history led to the publication of Nazi Germany's New Aristocracy(1990). He is at present working on a study that explores from a global point of view the demographic trends of the past ten thousand years, along with their concomitant technological, economic, and social developments. His other current research project focuses on the application of complexity theory to a comparative study of societies and their internal dynamics.

Jerry H. Bentley was professor of history at the University of Hawai‘i and editor of the

Journal of World History. His research on the religious, moral, and political writings of

Renaissance humanists led to the publication of Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament

Scholarship in the Renaissance (Princeton, 1983) and Politics and Culture in Renaissance

Naples (Princeton, 1987). More recently, his research was concentrated on global history

and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction. His book Old World Encounters:

Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (New York, 1993) examines

processes of cultural exchange and religious conversion before the modern era, and his pamphlet

Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (Washington, D.C., 1996)

discusses the historiography of world history. His most recent publication is The Oxford

Handbook of World History (Oxford, 2011), and he served as a member of the editorial team

preparing the forthcoming Cambridge History of the World. Jerry Bentley passed away in

July 2012.

Heather E. Streets-Salter is department chair and director of world history programs at Northeastern University. She is the author of Marital Races: The Military, Martial Races, and Masculinity in British Imperial Culture, 1857-1914 (2004), Empires and Colonies in the Modern World: A Global Perspective (2015) with Trevor Getz, and Southeast Asia and the Frist World War (forthcoming 2016). Her current research focuses on communist and anti-communist networks in interwar East and Southeast Asia.

Awesome book. It will completely improve your understanding of USA and other societies starting from the Early Modern Period onward. I made the mistake of renting this book instead of buying it. BIG MISTAKE. This book is definitely worth the money. It is written in an engaging way and the photos and illustrations are gorgeous. I highly recommend this book.

Great read

As a non-tradional, older student I found this book to be very easy to follow and well written. Using this book in my World Civ course made history more interesting than it has ever been for me. Very good book and well worth the money.

The online companion is the real hero.

This textbook was required by my history class.

The reason for my 4-star review is because the online companion for this book is great! Not only do they have practice questions to make sure you understand the content, but it has an online version of the textbook with highlighted portions to show you the most important information from the section. If you don't buy this book new, the online companion is $75 for one year.

I no longer use my hard copy because of the online companion. Unless you really like having a hard copy or it is required that you have the physical book for your class, forgo buying this and just purchase the online companion.

All in all, the text in the book is simply put and easy to understand. I wish they had included more details about certain parts of history since I feel some important events were left out.

Outwit the competition?

THE subtitle of the book is “A master class in out-thinking the competition”. Dave Trott does not live up to this promise.

I would go as far as saying that most of us would like to have competition like his, if this is all it takes to outwit them.

I do not write about disappointing books. I prefer not to bring them to anyone’s attention, and let them gather dust in a warehouse. Despite the misleading subtitle, this is an engaging book with lots of wit and wisdom written in a unusually accessible style.

Dave Trott is an advertising agency executive, who was inducted into the Creative Circle Advertising Hall of Heroes in 2009.

The thoughts in each of the book's 10 parts are arranged around a memorable story that enriches learning and embeds the idea in the memory. While the book is aimed at readers in the advertising industry, the messages have a much wider relevance.

Below are three examples.

In the part titled: “Creative is an adjective, not a noun” the concept is revealed through the story of an old lady’s conflict with British Gas. She resisted having British Gas change the pipes below her house as part of the national conversion to North Sea gas. She wanted her house left alone.

Neighbours described her as an “old dear”. She had lived in the house ever since she got married. Her husband was an abusive drunk who beat her each night for years. (In those days, wives did not report these matters to the police.)

One night, after the usual drinking and beating, he left and never returned.

It was a mixed blessing - the beatings stopped, but there was shame attached to being abandoned by one's husband. Neighbours understood this and were kind to her.

British Gas was unmoved and dug up the pipes in her home lifting the carpets, the lino and then the floorboards. The old lady watched and wept.

The British Gas team found a pit with a human skeleton in it. The skull had been crushed.

The old lady confessed - she couldn’t take the beatings anymore. Over a period of months, she had dug the pit and disposed of the sand. When it was large enough, and he came home drunk, she hit him with a cast-iron frying pan until he was dead. Then she dragged the body to the pit under the floorboards, covered it, and told everyone he had walked out on her.

That was an extraordinarily creative (if drastic) solution.

However, like all creativity it doesn’t come in a flash. Most creative acts require analysis of the primary problem (he beat her) and the secondary problem (she couldn’t leave). Solution? He had to disappear.

Creative solutions require hard work, often over months. The frail, frightened lady did it with the effort required to make the creative solution happen - day after day, for months.

Failure to do the hard work leaves a good idea just an idea.

Trott attended a discussion between Stephen Hawking, James Dyson, Robert Winston and Richard Dawkins, hosted by the Science Museum. The four range from the “merely brilliant to genius”.

They talked to each other about their work, bubbling with fun and eagerness. It seemed as if they could not wait to share what they had found out about the world.

What struck Trott as he watch and listened to them was that these were not merely four brilliant people, but four creative people. What makes them creative is their enquiring minds.

Edward de Bono says: “There are many people calling themselves creative who are mere stylists.” What separates the “creative” from the “stylist” is an enquiring mind. “Why does it have to be that way? Why?”

After divorcing his first wife, Trott met Cathy who was to become his second wife. She is Chinese, and hails from Singapore. The couple went to Singapore so Trott could meet his new wife’s family.

Her father had two wives and eight children, and she was a child of the second wife. They lived together in one house and went to the same school.

At school, Cathy was often asked what number wife her mother was. The question was not unusual in Singapore, and one she realised was unusual only when she came to London to study art.

After the meeting, Cathy asked Trott how he had found her father, since he spoke little English. Trott admitted that he felt odd being in the company of a man with two wives. Cathy said: "That’s funny, because he’s not sure he’s comfortable with the idea of his daughter marrying a man who just divorces his wives when he’s fed up with them."

The Western system makes perfect sense. If the relationship cannot work, you both get on with your separate lives.

To the Chinese, if a man takes on responsibility for a woman and children, he does so for life. Cathy’s father thought Trott took marriage trivially, changing wives as he did cars. When you get bored, you trade in the old one for a new model.

He realised that Cathy’s father and he actually agreed: both wanted to treat their wives with respect. But they had remarkably different ways of doing it.

Trott’s way was to treat her as an equal, with all the same opportunities, but also the same problems and responsibilities. The way of Cathy’s father was to shoulder all those problems and responsibilities himself.

Too often we think there is only one right way of seeing things, our way. What follows is that for me to be right, I must prove you are wrong. Little is learned this way.

As the philosopher Bertrand Russell said: "The problem with the world is that the ignorant are arrogant and cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt."

There is much to think about in this easily read book. Simply ignore the misleading title.

Deceptive title for a mediocre book

This book would make a mildly interesting blog, or maybe even a light-hearted coffee table book for a generic ad agency. But to give it such an evocative title is practically fraud. The only thing predatory about this book is the clickbait title and the misleading description.

Much more than just an advertising book.

There's nothing worse than a very droll book about advertising/marketing. Lord knows there are plenty of them.

But at the end of the day, advertising people are charged with making magic out of the mundane and making something for a broader audience than themselves (sometimes this actually happens). Fortunately, Mr. Trott realizes this and has transcended the usual "we did this and by God, it was awesome!" retelling of tales from the ad trenches and written something that most anyone-regardless of vocation or lifestage-can take something away from.

All you need to become a Conversation Company

Ever since I read The Cluetrain Manifesto in 1999, I have been a fan of the idea that thanks to the internet, markets are becoming conversations between real people. 13 years later, Steven van Belleghem has written a book that contains all the information you need to become a 'Conversation Company'. The book is filled with abstract models explained by real life cases, and reaches all levels between the philosophical idea behind 'conversation companies' and the practical points that anyone needs to consider when trying to become one.
For the first time in years I read all pages in a book, which is a compliment in itself. I can advise it to all other marketeers, also because I believe marketing through conversations is much more fun than the interrupting we do at the moment.

Vital reading for all companies

What is the true impact of the emergence of social media on companies? The question might sound trivial nowadays. Aren't virtually all companies -at least the public ones- `present' on social media, in one form or another? They probably are. But are they getting the maximum out of this `presence'? In other words: do they use social media as a strategic tool rather than a tactical one?

In this book, Steven Van Belleghem calls companies making strategic use of social media the `Conversation companies'. Rarely has a business author chosen a better word to express his idea: successfully using social media means leading conversations with whomever is talking about you, it's about re-actively AND pro-actively engaging with your audience. Companies all too often limit their social media presence to sending company updates (hoping that nobody will reply) or (if they're a little more sophisticated) replying to complaints and negative comments.

These companies are dealing with a massive amount of what Steven calls `unused conversation potential'. Use this potential fully, and you'll reap the benefits of loyal fans of your brands.
The caveat? You'll need to have a very close look at your company's culture, and most probably adapt it. That's easier said than done, but it's not impossible. Steven's book `the conversation company' even provides a concrete -and feasible- roadmap on how to do this.

Steven's message is pressing: companies that don't take these conversations seriously face the risk of being left behind. Perhaps for good.

So after taking my first ACT, I was surprised to find my reading sub-score to be the lowest. After a momentary loss of sanity I decided it would be best for me just to get help rather than belly-ache. I chose this book because it seemed like an easy and effective tool that was exactly what I was looking for. This book raised my reading score significantly, and its no longer the lowest (blast that Math). Buy it if you struggled on the ACT reading, it provides advise and test-taking strategies.

Best 3 minutes you'll spend for ACT reading

First time taking the ACT, scored 29 on reading section...not bad....got this book and did the readings for ten days before the exam and scored a perfect 36!! Best book out there for the least amount of time. Good luck

Sally Mitchell has worked on two research projects that have explored the nature and role of argument in higher education and have sought ways of helping staff improve the ability of students to employ arguments effectively in their disciplinary studies. Her other works include Competing and Consensual Voices, coedited with P.J.M. Costello, and Essays in Argument, written with Richard Andrews.
