Very good story

When I saw that this author had a new story I couldn't wait to read it. This was a very good story with great characters and well described scenes. I hope there is a sequel with Cecily she could use her own bit of happiness. My only complaint was that this was really short. I really do enjoy this author.

This small sized book (173 pages) covers a set of models that could fall under decision making tools (if you use a broad spectrum for that definition that is).

The models get placed under 4 basic questions:
1) How to improve yourself
2) How to understand yourself
3) How to understand others better
4) How to improve others

Some models are well known and broadly used, some are lesser known, some disappoint and some are nice surprises.

This book is a very fast read and really stripped down to the basics. The models are explained in single page format, followed up with an illustration. So as long as you don't expect detailed explanations on the models, you will love this one.

An unusual and helpful survey

Stumbled on this little book at the MIT Coop. I've been an analyst and strategic thinker for 25+ years, but have never seen a survey like this that covers so much territory so succinctly. It's a great overview to lots of the common conceptual frameworks used by decision analysts. It's not going to tell you enough to employ most of these techniques, but it does have enough info to point the user towards the right kind of tools for various kinds of problems. Just flipping through it as you contemplate a challenging problem should get neurons firing. My only criticism is that a lot of the examples are drawn from personal decisions, as opposed to corporate or pol-mil examples. Many of these models are applicable to those areas as well (or in fact were invented in those spheres).

Unrealized Expectations

To be fair, my two-star rating may be overly harsh based on your different expectations of the book.

In working with CEOs and management teams, a well-developed graphic model often spurs creative thoughts that lead to new insights and solutions. Graphic frameworks also lead to clearer interaction and more engagement. The subtitle "50 Models for Strategic Thinking" sounded directly applicable to my management consulting. What I hoped to find were good examples and expositions of proven frameworks, along with new frameworks not yet encountered.

What I found instead were models mostly concerned with personal growth, and much of the writing was superficial. The section on Festinger's cognitive dissonance theory, for example, exhibited a shallow understanding of its key points. Writing on the well-understood and useful SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis failed to identify influences as internal versus external, and helpful versus harmful. The graphic in the Wikipedia definition of SWOT is better, suggesting that the authors spent very little time researching their work.

Finally, to their credit, the authors encourage the reader to develop his/her own models. Sadly, though, the advice they offer is so imprecise and elementary as to be useless.

She's smart, alert, and perceptive

This is a junior read, but it reads like a perfect adult James Patterson novel. It has its twists and turns and is seen through the eyes of Tandorey (named after some food dish). A high functioning family with four children who are dupped by their parents who have mapped their children's physical body types with daily doses of designer drugs; the children were taught to believe they were vitamins. Their parents make their children "experiments" for these drugs. Each child excels at something. Hugo, the youngest is physically strong at the age of ten. Tandy is mentally set as a detective of sorts, her twin, Harrison, is a pianist of extrodinary talent and their older brother, Matty is a star professional football player. Hugo is designed after Matty, his hero.The title is deceptive, "suspect" is the key word. The children are suspected of murdering their very wealthy, deceptive, deceiving, conniving parents. Tandorey sets out to find out who killed her parents. This was an excellant and fun read even for an adult reader of James Patterson's novels.

Another Series to add to my must read list

For our October read, my Book Club decided to select an author (a prolific one) and everyone would just read the book of their choice by that author. We had so much fun with that idea that we are doing it again for November. October's selection was James Patterson. I'm a fan of James Patterson. I find most of his books highly entertaining. And unlike some readers, I'm not bothered by the fact that he doesn't write them all by himself. You have to give him credit - he doesn't pretend that he writes them alone and he uses his celebrity to help other authors.

What I liked about this book: It's a mystery and it's the first in a new young adult series. I love mysteries and young adult books. I'm especially delighted when a book falls into both categories. As with most James Patterson books, this is a quick read. I loved Tandy. In fact she may be the only character I really liked. She's not your usual teen girl. How many young girls, faced with the murder of both parents and being at the top of the suspect list would have the calm and cool nerve to set about solving the murders? Tandy's and her siblings' enhanced abilities do give the story a bit of an unreal aspect, but they also add to the over all mystery. Tandy is a very strong character who is aware of her flaws. I'm pretty sure this book is the first in a series, which makes me very glad as I have so many questions about Tandy, her childhood and her rather different family. I can't wait to read more.

What I didn't like about this book: With the exception of the family lawyer (and we really don't get to know him at all) all the adult characters are extremely unlikable. I particularly did not care for the investigators. The lead investigator, Detective Caputo, is very unprofessional, treats the children with total disdain and even outright hatred. Not that I have very much experience with real policemen, but I found him to be almost unbelievable. He is such an unlikable character that it was easy to sympathize with Tandy as she struggled to deal with him. I had an inkling about the resolution of this mystery (which I won't share with you because I don't believe in adding spoilers to reviews - especially reviews of new books), but Patterson and Paetro still managed to work in something I didn't quite expect.

This is a great thriller/mystery written for teens. Even though teens are the targeted audience, I highly recommend it for James Patterson fans of all ages.

Exciting read!

I just finished this book, and I have to say it was a lot of fun to read. Mystery is probably my favorite genre as far as genres go, but I didn't necessarily expect a lot from this. I have never read James Patterson. For some reason I always thought he was more thriller than mystery. I thought most of the twists in the book were fairly unexpected, though I will admit that when I read this I was dead tired and mostly looking for something fun that I didn't have to think a lot about. This is definitely that (in a good way). It keeps you guessing, and I didn't guess the ending, but after finishing it, it did seem like I should have at least suspected that ending (though it's by no means the expected or cliche ending). The characters (at least the Angel children characters) are all pretty likable. I agree with some others that detective Caputo was a jerk and almost too mean to be believable, but I think the authors did a good job of keeping him from becoming so obnoxious you want to quit reading, though I was disappointed he never really got what was coming to him (in my opinion). The book is kind of a modern-day Nancy Drew in some ways, but not so formulaic.

In any case, I'm really excited to read the next book, and I had a lot of fun with this one. It definitely leaves quite a bit open at the end. It resolves the main mystery, but there's other stuff that won't be resolved until the sequel, so if that's something you don't like, then you might want to keep that in mind before reading this.

I read the first edition of this book. It is excellent. It provides a systematic approach/ It covers fluid mechanics: steady flow, unsteady flow, viscoelastic properties of tissues, Windkessel and more sophisticated models of the circulation.

It provides clear examples and figures from the in-vitro and in-vivo data.

The section of valve physiology and pathophysiology was excellent. The discussion on prosthetic valves, grafts and other vascular scaffolds was very instructive, clearly written with illuminating figures.

The book ends with discussion of measurement techniques: pressure, flow, velocity including discussions of doppler echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging, computer fluid dynamics.

I hope the subsequent editions continue in this tradition and I look forward to seeing them.

About the Author
Dr. Donald H. Cunningham, professor of English and coordinator of technical and professional communication in the Department of English at Auburn University, is author of a number of college textbooks. He has served as president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and was founding editor of The Technical Writing Teacher (now Technical Communication Quarterly). He also has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Conference on College Composition and Communication. He is a fellow of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and the Society for Technical Communication. He was awarded the Society for Technical Communication Jay R. Gould Award for Excellence in Teaching Technical Communication.

Dr. Thomas E. Pearsall, professor emeritus and former head of the Department of Rhetoric at the University of Minnesota, is author of a number of college textbooks. He has served as president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and is the founder and first president of the Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication. Dr. Pearsall is a fellow of both the Society of Technical Communication and the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing. He is listed in Who�s Who in America and the Who�s Who is the World.

Dr. Elizabeth Overman Smith, associate professor, associate head, and coordinator of instructional technology in the Department of English at Auburn University, has worked as a writer, an editor, and a trainer for organizations providing computer-related training. She is active in the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and the Society for Technical Communication. She is the manager of the STC honor fraternities Sigma Tau Chi and Alpha Sigma.

Great book

I had to buy this book as part of a college course curriculum.

This is a great book for someone who is looking to beef up their business writing skills. I really like it as a 'reference' manual. It shows examples of how to write and communicate in the business world, basically what to and what not to say and do.

It is also easy to read and understand, which is a big plus for an educational literary work.

Could use some updating.

This is a good book to give you detailed information on different kinds of writing you might do at an office. The only problem with the book is that it was written in the early 2000s, making for a very boring computer chapter, because they were talking about how to use different programs like we have never seen a computer before. I think that this book needs to be updated, especially the chapter on computers, but other than that, definitely a good resource for everything business related, including reports, resumes, e-mails, memos, letters of all kinds, among other things.

The authors really need to have this book edited. There are a LOT of grammatical errors that just make this too painful to read for someone whose native language is English. Nearly every sentence needs help.
