Flourishing from the inland cities of Syria down through the Tigris and Euphrates valley, Syriac speakers in late antiquity created a new and often brilliant expression of Christian culture. Although the origins of their traditions are notoriously difficult to trace, authors of fourth-century Syrian communities achieved sophisticated forms of expression whose content little resembles the Christian culture of their neighbors to the west. From the fourth through the seventh centuries they achieved religious works of great beauty and complexity.

Increasing interest in Syriac Christianity has prompted recent translations and studies. To Train His Soul in Books explores numerous aspects of this rich religious culture, extending previous lines of scholarly investigation and demonstrating the activity of Syriac-speaking scribes and translators busy assembling books for the training of biblical interpreters, ascetics, and learned clergy.

Befitting an intensely literary culture, it begins with the development of Syriac poetry--the genre beloved by Ephrem and other, anonymous authors. It considers the long tradition of Aramaic and Syriac words for the chronic condition of sin, and explores the dimensions of the immense work of Syriac translators with a study of the Syriac life of Athanasius. Essays consider the activity of learned ascetics, with a proposal of the likely monastic origin of the Apocalypse of Daniel; the goal and concept of renunciation; and the changes rung by Syriac-speaking ascetics on the daily reality of housekeeping.

Also included in the volume are two essays on the influence of Syriac literary culture on Greek traditions, and in turn ascetic life. Finally, an original poem in Syriac demonstrates the continuing vitality of this culture, both in its homeland and in the Diaspora.

These essays seek to extend and honor the work of renowned scholar and pillar of the Department of Semitic and Egyptian Languages at the Catholic University of America, Sidney H. Griffith.

Robin Darling Young is associate professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame. Monica J. Blanchard is curator of the Semitics/Institute of Christian Oriental Research Library at the Catholic University of America.

Articles on a variety of Syriac topics

This volume is a collection of articles written in honor of Professor Sidney H. Griffith of the Catholic University of America. (Full disclosure: He supervised my doctoral dissertation.) Prof. Griffith is a well known scholar of Syriac and of Christian Arabic. The articles in this book concentrate on the Syriac aspect of his work. Quite a variety of topics are covered here. Two articles deal with Syriac poetry, while the rest deal with the ascetic practices of Syrian "solitaries" (a kind of proto-monk) and monks.

This is not a full academic review of the book, so I will just give the table of contents and my comments on a few of the articles.

PART I. POETRY AND EPHREM THE SYRIAN
1. "Syriac Stropic Poetry: Intercalated Psalms," by Joseph P. Amar
2. "Efr�n de Nisibe, Himnos De Virginitate, I-III," by Francisco Javier Mart�nez
This is a translation into Spanish, with commentary, of Ephrem's Hymns I-III on Virginity. Mart�nez offers some useful notes contrasting his translation choices with those of previous translators.

PART II. TEXTS, TERMS, METAPHORS
3. "Redeem Your Sins through Works of Charity," by Gary A. Anderson
4. "A Monastic Setting for the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel," by Alexander Golitzin
What struck me as most interesting about this article was Golitzin's observation that this apocalypse was written at a time when what can popularly be called "end times fever" was gripping the Syriac-speaking Christian world in the aftermath of the conquest by Islam. As is typical in troubled times, a host of dire end-of-the-world scenarios was spun by Christian writers who were upset by the emergence of Islam. These dire apocalypses seem to have perturbed the normal order of monastic life, so the author of this Apocalypse of Daniel wrote a work that completely ignored events in the wider world, in an apparent attempt to get the monks focused again on their inner, spiritual lives instead of being obsessed with "end times" prophecies.

5. "A Syraic Life of Athanasius of Alexandria," by Michael J. Hollerich
6. "Radical Renunciation: The Ideal of msarrquta," by Sebastian P. Brock.
7. "Housekeeping: An Ascetic Theme in Late Antiquity," by Susan Ashbrook Harvey
8. "The Influence of Evagrius Pontus," by Robin Darling Young
9. "The Syriac Discourses of Beh Isho` Kamulaya," by Monica J. Blanchard
10. "Ode to Joy," by Shawqi Talia
This final article is in fact a poem written in honor of Prof. Griffith, in the ancient Syriac tradition, by an Assyrian Christian and long-time colleague of Prof. Griffith in the Semitics Department of CUA. It is written in Neo-Aramaic (Surath dialect) and accompanied by an English translation.

Super satisfied with my decision to try out another "how to" book. This is a very high quality reference for anyone just getting involved in home recording. I have read many beginners books on the subject, but Chad takes this a few steps further. The audio clips are extremely helpful in giving the reader actual examples of how the varying techniques described can affect a tracking or mixing session. Just the stuff you need to know regardless of your level of proficiency as a musician recording at home. Chad offers common sense and economical approaches which yield excellent results, without too much overly technical jargon that intimidates a novice. The information is presented in an easy to understand style, and though this sounds like an endorsement of a beginner's method, there is much to be gleaned from those of us at a more intermediate or advanced level. You can only build a good project from a sound foundation, and that's what you get in "How to Record at Home on a Budget". Five stars indicate excellence, and excellence is not really attainable in the flesh. This is the only reason I give this book four stars.

This book is filled with almost everything you'll need to know about setting up your own home recording studio. It's a very helpful guide and has a ton of information and tips on some of the minimal gear you would need to get started. Record at home on a budget will also help you with advice on which gear to buy and how to use that gear to get the best results. It goes further into detail about how to mix and get the best possible sound with what you have. I've been recording for over 10 years and a lot of the information wasn't helpful for me because I had already experimented with buying all kinds of stuff I didn't really need, but if I had this book when I started it would have kept me from wasting so much money. If you're thinking of getting into home recording this book will be very helpful and will set you in the right direction. I'm still experimenting with some of the things I learned in this book and I'm positive it will help me with future recording decisions.

This book is extremely detailed, providing clear information on how get high quality recordings using affordable gear. It not only thoroughly covers the principles of audio engineering practices, but it also offers suggestions on equipment with a good bang-to-buck ratio. The included CD with sound samples help drive home the techniques, and the author describes exactly what he's doing to achieve the sounds. The main objective of the book is to demonstrate that it does not require a multi-thousand dollar investment to start making great recordings, and it does a great job of that. I have a few years experience with home recording, and I found a lot of useful information in this book. However, I can also see how it would be incredibly valuable for someone just starting out. If you're wanting to make great records without breaking the bank, you should really get this book!

Good material for AIR TRANSPORT Aircraft

This book does a GREAT job explaining MANY of the sytems found in Air Transport Category aircraft. It also does a very good job explaining the basic theory involved in many avionic systems, such as synchros, resolvers and flux valves. If the book were updated to cover some of the newer avionic systems, it would be the PERFECT book for an Avionics Fundamentals class!
However, despite the picture of an Electronic Instrument System (EFIS) instrument panel on the cover, it has almost NO information about EFIS. It could also use MORE coverage about, ARINC 429 (the standard for digital busses on most aircraft) newer strapdown intertial systems (such as AHRS and IRS) as well as Flight Management Systems, and the newer integrated autoflight systems. The book does not have any coverage of COMMUNICATION systems (VHF Comm, HF Comm, ACARS and SATCOM) nor does it cover some of the newer navigation systems (such as GPS/GNS/GLONASS, Microwave Landing Systems and Windshear Detection systems). They can also ELIMINATE data on the Omega Navigation System, as it was deactivated in 1997.
Again, this is a GREAT book for the material that it does cover, but it would be an even better book if it were updated!

I thought the book presented several interesting examples through eight papers covering various supply chain topics. Several of the papers have appendices with very useful information. This is a good book to take on a plane and read on one or two flights. But, subsequent research would be required to obtain the details necessary to actually implement the concepts.

About the Author

Klaus D. Sattler is a professor of physics at the University of Hawaii-Manoa in Honolulu. A pioneer in nanophysics, Dr. Sattler built the first atomic cluster source in 1980, which became a cornerstone for nanoscience and nanotechnology. In 1994, his research group at the University of Hawaii produced the first carbon nanocones. His current research focuses on novel nanomaterials, tunneling spectroscopy of quantum dots, and solar photocatalysis with nanoparticles for the purification of water. Dr. Sattler has been a recipient of the Walter Schottky Prize from the German Physical Society

Don't waste your money on this poorly written biography!

The author's 'research' came from news stories and Internet sites, but she seldom cites her sources, leading the reader to believe that she did all of the interviews herself (she didn't, I've read many of those quotes elsewhere). The writing is sloppy with frequent errors, lots of repetition (she refers to young Jeremy as 'truculent' at least a dozen times), few exact dates (she gives only the year of the most important events in Jeremy's life, such as his marriage and the death of his father) and little else.

If you are looking for a behind-the-scenes peek at Top Gear or Jeremy's other shows, look elsewhere. Colleagues such as Andy Wilman and James May are mentioned only once or twice and the only reason that Richard Hammond gets more attention is because of his accident -- the description of which is copied, complete with errors, from news accounts and Wikipedia.

You will learn much more about Jeremy Clarkson by reading his own books and the bios at the Top Gear and BBC websites or on Wikipedia.

Jeremy Clarkson: The Biography

It was quite fun searching for books on scribd after I signed up on the site and of course since I'm a big Top Gear did I just have to search for books concerning the program and its presenters and I found this book.

This may not be the deepest biography written I have read, but it was entertaining and quite informative and I quite like Jeremy Clarkson so I enjoyed the book.

The book is from 2007 so it was a bit ironic to read about the worries from the fans that the show wouldn't come back for another season...

About the Author

John McMurry, educated at Harvard and Columbia, has taught approximately 17,000 students in general and organic chemistry over a 30-year period. A Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University since 1980, Dr. McMurry previously spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

David S. Ballantine received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1977 from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1983 from the University of Maryland at College Park. After several years as a researcher at the Naval Research Labs in Washington, DC, he joined the faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Northern Illinois University, where he has been a professor since 1989.

Carl Hoeger received his B.S. in Chemistry from San Diego State University and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1983. After a postdoctoral stint at the University of California, Riverside, he joined the Peptide Biology Laboratory at the Salk Institute in 1985 where he ran the NIH Peptide Facility while doing basic research in the development of peptide agonists and antagonists. During this time he also taught general, organic, and biochemistry at San Diego City College, Palomar College, and Miramar College. He joined the teaching faculty at University of California, San Diego in 1998. Dr. Hoeger has been teaching chemistry to undergraduates for over 20 years, where he continues to explore the use of technology in the classroom; his current project involves the use of video podcasts as adjuncts to live lectures.

Virginia Peterson received her B.S. in Chemistry in 1967 from the University of Washington in Seattle, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1980 from the University of Maryland at College Park. Between her undergraduate and graduate years she worked in lipid, diabetes, and heart disease research at Stanford University. Following her Ph.D. she took a position in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Missouri in Columbia and is now Professor Emerita. When she retired in2011 she had been the Director of Undergraduate Advising for the department for 8 years and had taught both senior capstone classes and biochemistry classes for non-science majors. Although retired, Dr. Peterson continues to advise undergraduates and teach classes.

Mediocre Text

I had to purchase this book specifically for a college chemistry class (required the Mastering Chemistry Online component too). Having used another chemistry book several years before, I was preloaded with knowledge that made me realize how thin this text is compared to others. Much of the content is oversimplified where details are needed. Worst is the number of syntax errors in the chemical equations. Superscript numbers and mismatched charges. These simple editorial mistakes add a tremendous amount of confusion to an entry level chemistry student. Many of my peers spent much time scratching their heads rather than quickly absorbing content and moving forward. If you're thinking about purchasing this text for your own benefit (self-paced learning) skip it and pick up Introduction to General, Organic, & Biochemistry by Bettelheim, et al. If you must use this text for a class, I recommend picking up a second chemistry book to cross-reference. This book does have some strengths (great pictures, lots of good work problems at the end of each chapter, and plenty side-note information that ties the material to real world/healthcare related matters. The errors, however, make it so I can't recommend it to an entry-level chemistry student.

Mostly good

I really enjoy this text because of the organization, the simplification, and the way it uses illustrations to demonstrate important principles. I'm in Organic Chemistry now and also used the same text for inorganic chemistry last term. The only element of the text that is not helpful is all the errors. But, my professor gives us extra credit for finding the errors. So, I suppose it all works out in my favor. Sometimes the errors are typos and other times they're completely off-track. The "Selected Answers" book for the 7th edition is also error ridden. At times it gives you answers to questions that do not correspond to this edition, which is not helpful. But I do recommend purchasing the selected answers manual. It has helped me 90% of the time understand a problem due to the extended work shown or explain to a classmate how a problem is carried-out. Good luck, and have fun!
