Taking Henry in Hand, by Charles Pangbourne

When the eighteen-year-old intelligent but nerdy college student, Henry Talbot, attends a party at a frat house, his life is forever changed after he meets the exceedingly tall, beautiful Barbara Hopkins, a fellow student and basketball player.

Initially stunned that she should take an interest in someone like him, he begins dating her but during a meal at a restaurant Henry embarrasses Barbara when he is especially rude to the waitress attending their table.

Following the meal, he is given an ultimatum, either he allows Barbara to spank him for his bad behaviour or their relationship is over. Henry readily accepts her punishment which she delivers using her hand and a hairbrush, and although painful, it is clear that he is also sexually aroused by it. He is further humiliated when Barbara insists that he apologise to the waitress and even worse, show her the proof that he has been spanked.

Thus begins a female led relationship with the dominant Barbara who disciplines him with a variety of spanking implements including hairbrush, paddle, cane and tawse, whenever he steps out of line or doesn't meet her expectations. And it's not only Henry that participates in such a relationship as several of his friends later find themselves being subjected to rigorous discipline from their dominant girlfriends, who are often encouraged by Barbara.

Later, when Henry is introduced to Barbara's parents it becomes all too clear where Barbara gets her dominant tendencies from as her mother, Caroline, is very much in charge of the household, as Henry discovers when he spies her disciplining her own husband in the study.

Having spent some months together, the couple announce their engagement - it looks like sitting comfortably may be a thing of the past for Henry!

Training Henry would be a good description of this book
By Alan R Cohen
If you like stories of bare bottom spankings then this book is for you. Along with spanking it has paddling and caning .It has a young man named Henry meeting a beautiful woman Barbara who changes his life dramatically. The story then starts to include other men who don't know how to behave and Barbara teaches there girlfriend's how to change them. The book has many twists in it some I expected due to reading the synopsis others I was surprised by others .If I could rate this book higher I would .It is a real good read.

Really a Spanking Book
By Kindle Customer
The book is certainly not what I was hoping to read. I love the freedom books but this book begged the question, "How many ass whippings are enough?" The book became tiresome, even when her mother brought her implements to bear as mom beat dad.I think the audience for this book was a fetish group, a really small group. Most of us didn't mind the whipping since we all know how conniving and unfaithful they can be but Barbara had a good guy so I didn't understand why she was so tough on him.
My opinion, too much spanking.

The author does a good job of developing the characters
By Amazon Customer
Well-written story. The author does a good job of developing the characters, both the two main characters, and the side characters which really helped make the book an enjoyable read. Many well-described spanking scenes and right level of related sex scenes. Would be interested in a sequel.

Double Check
By Tom in KY
I purchased one of these thinking it was the full version- but it was not. The seller did not purposely misrepresent the item and provided a speedy refund- he even tried to refund my return postage. At any rate, Minitab is an outstanding program, but just realize the student version has limited functionality compared to the full version. If you are intending to use Minitab Student 14 for manufacturing defects analysis, specifically applying 6 Sigma methodology, Student 14 will likely not meet your needs. Just be sure to check with the the seller first.

Review
A tour de force of 12 breathtaking needlework projects. This large format book is an inspiration to all who love to stitch. The photography is sublime and the projects are stunning. Exquisite hand-stitched masterpieces with complete, detailed, how to instructions. From the stitched dogwood, berries, flowers and birds to leaves and woodland scenes, the projects enchant. These projects will become heirlooms. Includes a lift-out pattern sheet. Simply beautiful just to look at. This book is in a class of its own. YarnsandFabrics.co.uk Prepare yourself for Something Stunning. I'm telling you, this book is all about beauty and presentation! If you want a needlework book to drool over, to sigh over, to practically cry over - this is it. A Passion for Needlework, published this year by Inspirations, features a drop-dead-gorgeous collection of needlework projects that will woo you into a dreamy world of dazzling, delightful, sumptuous embroidery. Whether you buy this book for inspiration, for instruction, or just for decoration, you're definitely going to want it in your library (or, more likely, on your coffee table!). Put it on your Christmas wish list! When I pre-ordered A Passion for Needlework from Book Depository, I really had no idea what to expect from the book, beyond one thing: I knew it would be beautiful. Why? Because it's coming from Inspirations. They publish the world's most beautiful embroidery magazine. Their books have always been equally beautiful. Meandering around one day through lists of upcoming needlework books, I came across this one. I thought, That will be a pretty book. And my readers will want to know about it. And so I'll order it. That's as far as my thinking process went. I pretty much forgot about the book until it arrived week before last. When I opened the package, I just wasn't prepared! I don't know if I've ever been flabbergasted by an embroidery book. But I think this one did it. It's just that pretty. See, the book is huge - and I don't mean size-wise. While it's a nicely sized book (9.5" x 11", about 1/2" thick, nice cover, good quality paper, amazing color, and a satin ribbon bookmark to boot), the huge impact comes from the photos of the needlework within. This is a book that gets close and personal with all the embroidery! The whole book revolves around the photography of the twelve projects that unfold inside its cover. For every project, you'll find close-up photos that show astonishing stitching detail. This is eye candy at it's best! The projects in A Passion for Needlework range from colorful silk embroidery, to whitework embroidery, elegant monogramming, stumpwork, textured embroidery, scenic embroidery. It is quite an array! For the floral enthusiast, the book is a goldmine. You'll find Jane Nicholas's stumpwork floral creations, Susan O'Connor's contemporary interpretations of 17th century floral stitchery... ...and floral accents on delicate linen surrounding decorative initials. But there's much more than flowers here! Jenny McWhinney's "Falling Leaves" projects - which include a tree bedecked in autumn splendor and an owl surrounded by fall foliage - is especially captivating this time of year! Other projects include a whitework and drawn thread piece, stumpwork berries and leaves, a highly textured beach scene, and a proud peacock in stumpwork and other techniques, from designers Deborah Love, Lorna Bateman, Judy Wilford, Alison Cole. You'll find Trish Burr doing what she does best, with one of her exquisite needle painted birds; a sweet stumpwork posy by Julie Kniedl; a woodland scene by Jo Butcher featuring birch bark so real you could almost peel it. Twelve projects in all - and every one of them, gorgeous! The book begins with a photographic overview of all the projects, with a little blurb about each one. Then, it's broken down into the individual projects. Each project begins with a detailed list of stitches used and materials required. The instructions for the project follow next, with enough detail to follow along and succeed in reproducing it. The book is not super-heavy on instruction, though, making it more suitable, I think, for someone who is already a fairly competent stitcher - although the projects range in difficulty, so it really depends on your personal level and your motivation to work the project! Some of the instructions rely more on text than on visual aids. When reading through each project from start to finish, though, the written instructions are clear. In most cases, the designer takes you step by step through each detail. Some projects include step-by-step photos for the various techniques employed... ...while others rely on small diagrams here and there to clarify the text. In the back of the book, there's a brief stitch glossary with diagrams for all the basic stitches employed in the various projects. And finally, in the very back of the book - in true Inspirations fashion - you'll find a pull out section with all the patterns. http://www.needlenthread.com/2016/11/a-passion-for-needlework-book-review.html Mary Corbet's Needle 'n Thread

Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34, by Bryan Burrough

In Public Enemies, bestselling author Bryan Burrough strips away the thick layer of myths put out by J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI to tell the full story—for the first time—of the most spectacular crime wave in American history, the two-year battle between the young Hoover and the assortment of criminals who became national icons: John Dillinger, Machine Gun Kelly, Bonnie and Clyde, Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, and the Barkers. In an epic feat of storytelling and drawing on a remarkable amount of newly available material on all the major figures involved, Burrough reveals a web of interconnections within the vast American underworld and demonstrates how Hoover’s G-men overcame their early fumbles to secure the FBI’s rise to power.

From Publishers Weekly
Burrough, an award-winning financial journalist and Vanity Fair special correspondent, best known for Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco, switches gears to produce the definitive account of the 1930s crime wave that brought notorious criminals like John Dillinger and Bonnie and Clyde to America's front pages. Burrough's fascination with his subject matter stems from a family connection—his paternal grandfather manned a roadblock in Arkansas during the hunt for Bonnie and Clyde—and he successfully translates years of dogged research, which included thorough review of recently disclosed FBI files, into a graceful narrative. This true crime history appropriately balances violent shootouts and schemes for daring prison breaks with a detailed account of how the slew of robberies and headlines helped an ambitious federal bureaucrat named J. Edgar Hoover transform a small agency into the FBI we know today. While some of the details (e.g., that Dillinger got a traffic ticket) are trivial, this book compellingly brings back to life people and times distorted in the popular imagination by hagiographic bureau memoirs and Hollywood. Burrough's recent New York Times op-ed piece drawing parallels between the bureau's "reinvention" in the 1930s and today's reform efforts to combat the war on terror will help attract readers looking for lessons from history.

From Booklist
The literature on Depression-era desperadoes such as John Dillinger is exhaustive but hardly exhausted, as Stanley Hamilton's Machine Gun Kelly's Last Stand (2003) and Burroughs' offering indicate. Burroughs imparts his personal fascination with such charismatic criminals to his readers as he strips the mopes of folkloric myth to restore them to their rightful places as bank robbers, kidnappers, carjackers, and cop killers. Burroughs' work also benefits from recently released FBI records. His narrative seamlessly incorporates that information with extant knowledge, a boon to readers ready for a chronicle of the cases that elevated the Bureau of Investigation to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In 1933 the BI was not yet the country's premier police agency; it became so via its pursuit of gangsters who murdered BI agents in an infamous Kansas City attack. Burroughs' grip on J. Edgar Hoover's subsequent investigations is solid as he slyly dramatizes what kind of people Bonnie and Clyde, "Baby Face" Nelson, "Pretty Boy" Floyd, the Karpis-Barker gang, and their confederates really were. A 10-strike for the true-crime fan. Gilbert Taylor

The Dillinger Canon Gets A New Tome
By Ellen Poulsen
When I first opened this credible, well-researched book, I was delighted to see photos of the FBI agents I have admired in my own Dillinger research. For the first time, a face to the men who put their lives on the line to hunt the public enemies of the 1930s! Also, as a person who has researched the Dillinger women for almost two decades, my delight with the book was established at the respect Burrough paid to the molls. Doris Lockerman's eyewitness account of the night Melvin Purvis helped Frechette, by letting her sleep during the endless interrogation - that is not an anti-FBI story but a pro-FBI story.

The term "plagiarism," in one review, confuses me completely. The use of quotes originally published under copyright by Melvin Purvis, is "fair use," not "plagiarism." Fair use is defined by publishing law, and there is no evidence of such encroachment here. In defense of quoting Melvin Purvis - the man was hounded and silenced by Hoover. It is important that readers, who may not have purchased Purvis's book, get the vantage point of his own opinions.

I agree with Rick Mattix that downloadable FBI documents are the tip of the iceberg. The FBI Reading Room holds the true history in the 38,000 pages on file in the stacks. Burrough has widely, and accurately, cited those documents.

And where is it written that historians can no longer examine the role of Melvin Purvis? Mr. Purvis, one of my heroes in the Dillinger saga, has inspired controversy since his original role in the FBI ended. Mr. Burrough went to great length to feature the faces of the FBI agents in a never-before published photo gallery. He honored their role by doing so.

For readers who hunger for more information on the peripheral gang members, there is a lot of new material. The true address of the St. Andrews Hotel in New York City, for instance, where John Paul Chase lammed with Sally Bachman, is one important detail I've never seen. Also, Burrough confirmed my suspicions that Lester Gillis never trusted Bachman. This book offers many levels upon which the reader can discern with intelligence and objectivity.

A fascinating story, well-told.
By Arrowleaf
"Public Enemies" is a an excellent book, loaded with detail and extremely readable. Burrough's unique approach to the subject matter (showing how the careers of the criminals and their pursuers intertwined over a remarkably short period of time) allows us to see ALL sides of the people and the events involved. As a result, it is neither pro-criminal nor pro-FBI -- rather it is a fascinating documentary of a remarkable time period in American history.

The Real Story of '30s Gangsters-Not the Hollywood Version
By A Customer
Brian Burrough has taken alot of time to set the record straight about several major criminal gangs in the 1930s. John Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde, "Baby Face Nelson" and other criminals traveled primarily through the central U.S., robbing and murdering along the way. Local police deparmtents were either powerless to stop them or were so corrupt they wouldn't do anything. Into this situation stepped the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Investigation. (It was named the Federal Bureau of Investigation -- the F.B.I.-- later.) It's agents were not the highly-trained agents we see today. J. Edgar Hoover and his agents had to learn along the way; they get the job done, but mistakes are made as the criminals are rounded up. Be prepared to see the criminals in a new light: Bonnie and Clyde, for example, are nothing like the 1960s movie. The real Bonnie & Clyde were nothing but sociopaths who murdered at the drop of a hat.
If you have liked Burrough's other efforts (Barbarians at the Gate, Vendetta, and Dragonfly) you will enjoy Public Enemies. If you haven't read any of his previous works, get this book and you will be happy to have read it!

A History of Modern Morocco, by Susan Gilson Miller

Morocco is notable for its stable and durable monarchy, its close ties with the West, its vibrant cultural life, and its centrality to regional politics. This book, by distinguished historian, Susan Gilson Miller, offers a richly documented survey of modern Moroccan history. The author's original and astute interpretations of the events, ideas, and personalities that inform contemporary political life are testimony to her scholarship and long association with the country. Arguing that pragmatism rather than ideology has shaped the monarchy's response to crisis, the book begins with the French invasion of Algeria in 1830 and Morocco's abortive efforts at reform, the duel with colonial powers and the loss of independence in 1912, the burdens and benefits of France's forty-four year dominion, and the stunning success of the nationalist movement leading to independence in 1956. In the post-independence era, the book traces the monarchy's gradual monopolization of power and the resulting political paralysis, ending with the last years of Hassan II's reign, when Moroccan society experienced a sudden and radical opening. A postscript brings events up to 2012, covering topics such as Morocco's "war on terror," the dtente between the monarchy and the Islamists, and the impact of the Arab Spring. This concise, readable book will inform and enthrall students coming to the history of North Africa for the first time, and also those in other disciplines searching for the background to present-day events in the region.

Review
"Told with wit, intimate knowledge and commendable brevity and pace."
The Times Literary Supplement

"Miller demonstrates a deft historical hand, breaking down a complex and multi-faceted history into nine chapters that cover 180 years of Moroccan history. ... Miller makes an important contribution to the field of North Africa studies. She has written an engaging narrative that will interest both professors and undergraduates. After finishing Miller's insightful survey, readers can only hope - much as does the author and this reviewer - that its publication will contribute to a better understanding of the blockages that have prohibited 'contemporary historical discourse' while also pointing to future paths of research."
Stacy E. Holden, The International Journal of African Historical Studies

Synthesis with Flair
By Diana Wylie
Synthesizing decades of scholarship and enlivening them with her deep knowledge of the country, historian Susan Miller tells the story of modern Morocco from 1830 right up to the present, providing an excellent guide for university students as well as for serious travelers who want to know, and not just be seduced by, this enchanting land. Miller's exceedingly well-informed history fights successfully against those who would reduce Morocco's past to a simple story of a pious monarchy bludgeoned by foreign powers. Reality, as she shows, was much more complicated -- and fascinating -- than that. Her book is timely: it opens debate on what is Morocco's "authentic" history at the same time as Moroccans are newly questioning received ideas about their past.

Modern Morocco
By howard
Susan Gilson Miller has written an academic but accessible history of an area that has been neglected by scholars in the West. As a historian I appreciated the footnotes and bibliography, but if you are looking for a good overview, you should definitely include this work.

Accessible and informative
By MJ
This book is a good read for anyone looking for a quick primer on the recent history of Morocco. I like the fact that there is such a book focusing on the past 185 years or so. The history of Morocco is so much older, but it is almost impossible to absorb it all at once. This modern history is very accessible, particularly if you are on your way to visit Morocco, as we are. I feel better equipped to make this trip having taken the time to read this book. And even though it is basically a beginner's book, I can tell by the careful research and attention to detail in the writing that it is the work of a true scholar.

Leisure (Key Ideas), by Tony Blackshaw

No single introductory book has until now captured the range of thought appropriate for scrutinizing the idea of leisure. Beginning with a discussion of expressions in classical thought, etymological definitions and key leisure studies concepts, Blackshaw suggests that the idea abounds with ambivalence, which is unlikely ever to be resolved.

After analyzing the rise and fall of modern leisure patterns, the emphasis shifts from the historical to the sociological and the author identifies and critically discusses the key modernist and postmodernist perspectives. Drawing on the idea that leisure studies is a ‘language game’, Tony Blackshaw subsequently offers his own original theory of liquid leisure which asks some key questions about the present and the future of leisure in people’s lives, as well as what implications it has for individuals’ abilities to embrace the opportunity for an authentic existence that is both magical and moral.

Leisure is an essential purchase for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and academics in the fields of Sociology of Leisure, Sports and Leisure Studies, and Popular Culture.

Contagious: Why Things Catch On, by Jonah Berger

The New York Times bestseller that explains why certain products and ideas become popular. “Jonah Berger knows more about what makes information ‘go viral’ than anyone in the world” (Daniel Gilbert, author of the bestseller Stumbling on Happiness).

What makes things popular? If you said advertising, think again. People don’t listen to advertisements, they listen to their peers. But why do people talk about certain products and ideas more than others? Why are some stories and rumors more infectious? And what makes online content go viral?

Wharton marketing professor Jonah Berger has spent the last decade answering these questions. He’s studied why New York Times articles make the paper’s own Most E-mailed list, why products get word of mouth, and how social influence shapes everything from the cars we buy to the clothes we wear to the names we give our children.

In Contagious, Berger reveals the secret science behind word-of-mouth and social transmission. Discover how six basic principles drive all sorts of things to become contagious, from consumer products and policy initiatives to workplace rumors and YouTube videos. Learn how a luxury steakhouse found popularity through the lowly cheesesteak, why anti-drug commercials might have actually increased drug use, and why more than 200 million consumers shared a video about one of the most seemingly boring products there is: a blender.

Contagious provides a set of specific, actionable techniques for helping information spread—for designing messages, advertisements, and content that people will share. Whether you’re a manager at a big company, a small business owner trying to boost awareness, a politician running for office, or a health official trying to get the word out, Contagious will show you how to make your product or idea catch on.

From Booklist
We’re all familiar with the idea of something—a video clip, for example—going viral. But how does it happen? Berger identifies six principles that operate, either singly or in combination, when anything goes viral, including social currency (a restaurant makes itself so hard to find that it becomes famous); emotion (the clip of Susan Boyle’s first appearance on Britain’s Got Talent exploded on YouTube because people reacted to it emotionally); triggers (more people search online for the song “Friday” on Friday than on any other day of the week); and practical value (a man’s video showing how to cleanly shuck a cob of corn exploded due to its useful application). Some of what the author talks about here will seem utterly obvious, but there is plenty of insider stuff as well (for example, the brain trust at Apple debated which way the logo should face on the cover of its laptops: rightside up to the user, or rightside up to someone looking at the laptop’s open lid?). On such decisions are fortunes made. An engaging and often surprising book. --David Pitt

Review
“Jonah Berger is as creative and thoughtful as he is spunky and playful. Looking at his research, much like studying a masterpiece in a museum, provides the observer with new insights about life and also makes one aware of the creator's ingenuity and creativity. It is hard to come up with a better example of using social science to illuminate the ordinary and extraordinary in our daily lives.” (Dan Ariely, James B. Duke professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University and bestselling author of Predictably Irrational)

“Why do some ideas seemingly spread overnight, while others disappear? How can some products become ubiquitous, while others never gain traction? Jonah Berger knows the answers, and, with Contagious, now we do, too." (Charles Duhigg, author of the bestselling The Power of Habit)

“If you are seeking a bigger impact, especially with a smaller budget, you need this book. Contagious will show you how to make your product spread like crazy.” (Chip Heath, co-author of Made to Stick and Decisive)

“Jonah Berger knows more about what makes information ‘go viral’ than anyone in the world.” (Daniel Gilbert, Professor of Psychology, Harvard University and author of Stumbling on Happiness)

“Jonah Berger is the rare sort who has studied the facts, parsed it from the fiction—and performed groundbreaking experiments that have changed the way the experts think. If there’s one book you’re going to read this year on how ideas spread, it’s this one.” (Dave Balter, CEO of BzzAgent and Co-founder of the Word of Mouth Marketing Association)

“Think of it as the practical companion to Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point.” (Tasha Eichenseher Discover)

“[Berger] sheds new light on phenomena that may seem familiar, showing with precision why things catch on. . . . As a playbook for marketers, Contagious is a success.” (Danielle Sacks Fast Company)

“Contagious contains arresting — and counterintuitive — facts and insights. . . . Most interesting of all are the examples Berger cites of successful and unsuccessful marketing campaigns.” (Glenn C. Altschuler The Boston Globe)

"For nonexperts who puzzle about the best way to make an impact in a world of social media addicts with short attention spans, it provides plenty to think about. . . . If there were a 'like' button underneath it, you'd probably find yourself clicking it." (Maija Palmer Los Angeles Times)

“An infectious treatise on viral marketing. . . . Berger writes in a sprightly, charming style that deftly delineates the intersection of cognitive psychology and social behavior with an eye toward helping businesspeople and others spread their messages. The result is a useful and entertaining primer that diagnoses countless baffling pop culture epidemics.” (Publishers Weekly)

“The book is just plain interesting. Berger’s cases are not only topical and relevant, but his principles seem practical and are easily understood. . . . I have a strong feeling that this book will catch on.” (Ben Frederick The Christian Science Monitor)

"An exegesis on how ideas really 'go viral' (hint: the internet gets too much credit) by a marketing wunderkind." (Details)

"A provocative shift in focus from the technology of online transmission to the human element and a bold claim to explain 'how word of mouth and social influence work . . . [to] make any product or idea contagious." (Kirkus Reviews)

STEPPS on how to get YOUR content shared!
By Steven Woloszyk
Jonah Berger is a professor at the Wharton School of Business. He dropped two books last year, about a month apart, with this one I'm reviewing and Invisible Influence. His work reminds me a little of Malcolm Gladwell and he even references The Tipping Point early in the book.

These kind of books, where the author presents anecdotal evidence and real life stories to illustrate points, are fun to read for me as I enjoy when the author helps you relate with the "stories" presented to validate a point.

Jonah writes to inform us of why things catch on. We see this quite a bit with things going "viral" with social media, but he goes deeper than just the social media aspect of contagiousness.

He provides an easy to follow acronym for outlining what items can help something catch on. This acronym is STEPPS and the books is divided into 6 chapters describing each of the elements. They are as follows:

Social Currency - Being "in-the-know" on something and wanting to share it with others.

Triggers - How one thing will instantly trigger a thought of something else. Peanut butter makes you think of jelly. Coffee and donuts go together, etc.

Emotion - When something inspires us and evokes emotion, we are often inspired to share. Some feelings are more prone to sharing like humor, awe, excitement, and on the negative side, anger and anxiety.

Public - Summed up as social proof. Two restaurants with same cuisine and one has a line out the door and the other one is practically empty. Where would you like dine?

Practical Value - Information that is useful is far more likely to be shared.

Stories - When a good story is told, it will often suck us in, evoke emotion, and prompt us to want to share.

Amazon reviewers give this one a 4.5 after 676 reviews. Goodreads gives it a 3.87 after 11,603 ratings and 1,090 reviews. I thought the book was entertaining but didn't really feel like there was anything revolutionary about the content. Still, if you enjoy psychology and social behaviors along the same lines as Malcolm Gladwell, then you might want to pick it up.

Fascinating read for marketers trying to unlock the secrets to viral success
By Jim Williams, Influitive
Jonah Berger's Contagious is a fascinating read. Not only is the book packed with entertaining examples of viral campaigns, but each is backed with painstaking analysis into the science of social transmission. What you end up with is a veritable blueprint for creating ideas, campaigns and messages that spread like wildfire.
There are six essential factors that contribute to contagious ideas, shows Jonah, and a quick look at some of the most successful viral campaigns reveals each of them at work:

Social currency. We share things that make us look good or help us compare favorably to others. Exclusive restaurants utilize social currency all the time to create demand.

Triggers. Ideas that are top of mind spread. Like parasites, viral ideas attach themselves to top of mind stories, occurrences or environments. For example, Mars bar sales spiked when in 1997 when NASA's Pathfinder mission explored the red planet.

Emotion. When we care, we share. Jonah analyzed over six months of data from the New York Times most emailed list to discover that certain high arousal emotions can dramatically increase our need to share ideas - like the outrage triggered by Dave Carroll's "United Breaks Guitars" video.

Public. People tend to follow others, but only when they can see what those others are doing. There is a reason why baristas put money in their own tip jar at the beginning of a shift. Ideas need to be public to be copied.

Practical. Humans crave the opportunity to give advice and offer tips (one reason why advocate marketing works - your best customers love to help out), but especially if they offer practical value. It's why we `pay it forward' and help others. Sharing is caring.

Stories - People do not just share information, they tell stories. And stories are like Trojan horses, vessels that carry ideas, brands, and information. To benefit the brand, stories must not only be shared but also relate to a sponsoring company's products. Thus the epic failure of viral sensations like Evian's roller baby video (50M views) that did little to stem Evian's 25% drop in sales.

There is so much this book offers marketers, making it required reading that follows in the footsteps of Malcolm Gladwell and the Heath brothers. It also perfectly demonstrates why advocate marketing is such a powerful idea for modern marketers. Viral campaigns eschew overt marketing messages by cleverly tapping into consumer wants, desires and emotional needs. Similarly, advocate marketing helps marketers reach audiences through a more effective and trusted means than direct messaging. We share our experiences because that act enhances our personal and professional reputation and makes us feel good. When marketers tap into these very human needs, they can reach a much broader audience with a more genuine message than any advertisement can provide.

Do you ever wonder why some advertisements are so annoying and corny
By ryan sansing
Do you ever wonder why some advertisements are so annoying and corny? Many of us imagine that ad writers lack our higher level of taste. How is it that some important news stories are ignored, while a video of a grandmother dancing drunk on the table gets millions of views? In his award-winning, New York Times best seller Contagious Why Things Catch On, author Jonah Berger gives countless real-life examples of the mysterious methods employed to capture the logic defying attention of the masses. The chapter on social currency describes how you can yoke your product to your customers desire to improve their image making word-of-mouth, and web, your best form of marketing. Next he explains how subconscious triggers lead to surprising results. One example is the horrible book review that leads to thousands more copies sold. Directly manipulating the emotions is another strategy. What sells more, happy emotions or sad? The answer is according to Contagious is both, as long as it is emotional arousal, anxiety, anger, or bright joy. The chapter on the public is all about how to make people show your logo everywhere. Good old-fashioned practical value is also described as we love to share those genuine life hacks with our friends and family. If we believe we can help others save time or money, we will spread the word. Finally we learn the power of narrative. If we can tie a product or service to a good story, then we ride the waves of idle chatter. The author peppers his lessons with juicy examples that are surprising and interesting. Overall the book will change the way you see viral marketing and communication in our modern age and is genuinely fun to read.

Opening Repertoire: Nimzo and Bogo Indian (Everyman Chess-Opening Repertoire), by Christof Sielecki

International Master Christof Sielecki presents a repertoire for Black based on the Nimzo-Indian and Bogo-Indian defenses. The Nimzo-Indian has always enjoyed a reputation as a dynamic, reliable defense against 1 d4 and continues to be as popular as ever at all levels. When White avoids the Nimzo-Indian with 3 Nf3 or 3 g3, however, Black needs to find another solution. Sielecki solves this perennial problem by also offering a repertoire with the Bogo-Indian Defense. In both the Nimzo and the Bogo-Indian, Sielecki focuses on lines in which Black adopts a dark-square strategy. This creates a system-type approach which links the variations to a common theme, making the repertoire much easier to learn and understand. Using illustrative games, Sielecki examines the typical tactics and strategies for both sides, and highlights key move order issues. This book tells you all you need to know about playing the Nimzo and Bogo-Indian.
*A repertoire for Black against mainline 1 d4
*Packed with new ideas and critical analysis
*Explains the important thematic ideas

Review
While The Nimzo and Bogo Indian offers plenty of concrete analysis there is also a great deal of explanatory prose, which should make it accessible to a wide range of players from 1800 to 2400. (John Donaldson, International master, International Master www.JeremySilman.com)

My silicon friends and I spent some time checking Sielecki's analysis in the two lines for White that I know best (4.Qc2 and 4.f3). I found his analysis to be comprehensive, well sourced and well explained...suitable for the ambitious club player. (John Hartmann Chess Life)

Great Book!
By derfootmarcus
After reading through this book I have been extremely satisfied with both the repertoire choices and the way that they are presented. The book contains a beefy 440 pages which includes thorough explanations of the lines in addition to 44 fully annotated games. I found the annotated games to be particularly helpful because this gives the opening lines in addition to the flavor of the ensuing middle games. This allows the reader to generate a deeper understanding of the strategic themes, which is often more important than specific move choices in this complex.

The book is very well made, which came as a surprise to me since I own several other books from Everyman. While the other books I own by the publisher are simply a flimsy paperback, this book has a more robust outer covering. In addition, the text and diagrams are large and easy to read.

I feel that PackerFan's criticisms are unfair and somewhat ignorant to the purpose of such a book. If the openings presented are not well suited to your individual style, it is not the fault of the book. The high level names involved in the presented games clearly demonstrates the objective soundness of the opening lines, and Mr. Sielecki also includes several choices in many lines in order to suit the playing styles of different players. In addition, you say that the character of Mr. Sielecki's play is not present in the book, yet he annotates many of his own tournament games within the text.
edit: Ah it seems that his review has been removed... Quite appropriate.

I definitely recommend this book and look forward to a future of playing the Nimzo/Bogo.

Want some decent black square lines in the Nimzo/Bogo?
By Jon Strohbehn
If you are a mid range tournament player and already play the Nimzo and some Queen's Indian equivalent, this may be the perfect book for you. It's over 400 pages on a relatively compact selection of lines, most of which are just slightly off the beaten path, except for the Hubner variation which came close to driving the Rubinstein into oblivion some years ago. The book is mostly devoted to "black square strategies" whenever they can be applied, which is most of the time with this repertoire. If you are not familiar with the concept of a black square strategy, then this is probably not the book for you. In many cases the author says he want to present lines where positional thinking is paramount, but does not spell out the positional aspects except by example. This is a bit like what John Watson is inclined to do - present numerous examples to illustrate some concept - but the concepts in general are not always spelled out. Well, there are lots of sources for the underlying concepts elsewhere. If one were new to the Nimzo complex, some supplemental material would be highly advisable. Decent supplemental material on the Bogo complex is a little harder to come by, and the underlying logic of move selection is as obscure here as anywhere else.

What the reader gets is a selection of dark square set-ups in the Nimzo/Bogo along with a related line in the Catalan. What the reader does not get is any help in figuring out likely transpositions from those players that start anyway other than 1.d4 and 2.c4. Your'e on your own against the London or Torre for instance, but a "complete repertoire" is not advertised.

The author also used material covered well elsewhere as a guide to what NOT to cover, when possible. For instance, there are several references to the Nimzo Indian Move by Move by John Emms. If Emms covers a line, then Sielecki generally doesn't, for that very reason.

Although he has a video presence, this is his first book and comes in at over 400 pages for a relatively small selection of lines. I can't speak to the quality of his personal analysis, but he does quote opinions of well known players. The presentation of variations and positions does seem clear and well laid out. From what I can tell, the evaluations are realistic, often leading to a small white advantage. There's a trade off for not requiring deep theory. He pushes the idea that if one knows a position well, a defensive position with possible counter-chances is enough.

Christof Sielecki admits to being a chess book addict, as am I, and I already own most of the books in his bibliography. (Is there no 12 step program for such as us?)

The basis of my opening repertoire
By chungking
The openings in this book - new to me - have become the basis for my opening repertoire. The good thing about including Nimzo and Bogo is that Black gets a complete opening treatment in a single book, against White's early Nf3 as well as the usual Nc3.

Unlike many other strong masters (cough, Nunn, cough), Christoph always leads with strategy and explanation, rather than with masses of analysis and calculation. As a result, his book is great as a learning aid - although also detailed enough to be a reference. I can see that a LOT of work went into this.

I bought my copy direct - autographed! - from the author in Germany. Very delighted with the value here.

For reference, I'm a USCF Expert.
