About the Author
Peretz Opoczynski (1892–1943), a journalist by profession, found work as a mailman in the Warsaw ghetto after the war started, and wrote many pieces for the secret archive until he was most likely rounded up in January 1943. Josef Zelkowicz (1897–1944), an ethnographer and professional journalist writing in Yiddish before the war, was deported in 1944 to Auschwitz, where he perished. Samuel D. Kassow is Charles H. Northam Professor of History at Trinity College. David Suchoff is professor of English at Colby College.

Jewish Anti-Assimilationist Sentiment, and Jewish Conduct in the Nazi German-Made Lodz and Warsaw Ghettos

This work features the written works of Peretz Opoczynski (Warsaw ghetto) and Jozef Zelkowicz (Lodz ghetto). Much of the everyday information has been presented before (see the first comment under this review). For this reason, my review devotes considerable attention to the sociology and politics of Poland’s prewar Jews.

NEGATIVISM TOWARDS ACCULTURATED AND ASSIMILATED POLISH JEWS

In his description of the authors, editor Kassow comments, (quote) Before the war, Opoczynski and Zelkowicz were journalists who knew the people they were writing for: the factious, argumentative, opinionated Polish Jews who read the morning Yiddish newspapers…Modern secular Jews loved to hear gossip about Hasidic rebbes; Hasidim avidly read exposes of crafty criminals. Yiddish-speaking Jews devoured biting satires of Polish-speaking Jews (SHMENDRIKES)[SCHMENDRICKS, that is, nobodies] and their shallow pretensions. (unquote). (p. viii). [For an exposition of the contempt of Peretz Opoczynski towards Polish-speaking Jews--as SHMENDRICKS--see p. 42 and p. 93].

Acculturated and assimilated Polish Jews were “too Jewish” for many Poles and “not Jewish enough” for many Jews. Editor Kassow alludes to the fact (as noted by Endeks) that Polish-speaking Jews remained Jews first and “Poles” second, while anti-assimilationist Jews warned that even outward Polonization meant a suicidal loss of essential Jewishness, (quote) While the Polish-language Jewish press showed great sympathy for Zionism, supported the new Hebrew literature in Palestine, and extensively reviewed Yiddish literature and theater, the Yiddish-language sector stubbornly refused to return the favor…The Yiddish writer Yehoshue Perle called them, “MENTSHN ON A MORGN”, people without a future… (unquote). (p. xi). Furthermore, (quote) Opoczynski, more outspoken,…made no secret of his contempt and even hatred of Polish-speaking Jews. (unquote). (p. xii).

NEGATIVISM TOWARDS GENTILES

Peretz Opoczynski of the Warsaw ghetto wrote of a situation where Jewish mail carriers were not acting as uprightly as Christian mail carriers. This prompted the following quoted remark of some angry Jews, “You’re worse than the GOYIM.” (p. 48).

Another derogatory term for gentiles, SHEYGETZ, was also used by Jews. This was reported by Jozef Zelkowicz of the Lodz ghetto. (p. 175, 178).

ATHEISM AND COMMUNISM INTERTWINED WITH THE YIDDISHIST MOVEMENT

Editor Samuel D. Kassow writes, (quote) At some point he [Zelkowicz] joined the militantly secular, Yiddishist, and pro-Soviet Left Poyalei Tsiyon [POALE ZION] party, which also included the noted historians Emanual Ringelblum and Raphael Mahler. The party, which had a particularly strong presence in Lodz, was a staunch supporter of YIVO, and the Central Yiddish School Organization (CYSHO), a network of secular Yiddish schools supported by the Bund. (unquote). (p. xxvi).

GRAVE ROBBERY: NOT ONLY POLES. JEWS ALSO ROBBED THE GRAVES OF JEWS

Neo-Stalinist Jan T. Gross has gotten a lot of media attention through his portrayal of Poles as a dastardly people “out to get the Jews”, animated by (what else?) greed and anti-Semitism. This included lurid accounts of Jewish burial sites looted--presumably by Poles--as in Gross’ GOLDEN HARVEST.

In reality, grave robbery is no “Pole on Jew” thing. It is an unremarkable behavior that respects no nationality, and is common under the brutalizing conditions of war and occupation. Jozef Zelkowicz of the Lodz ghetto describes the funeral of a Jew who had recently died, (quote) He’s wrapped in rags with a rotten board under his back—a rotten piece of wood that will later be stolen to warm a spoonful of soup for someone still alive…Who robbed the Jews of their sense of piety toward the dead, nurtured in their hearts for centuries? (unquote). (p. 164).

JEWISH COLLABORATION WITH THE NAZIS

By way of introduction, the public has learned via JUDENJAGD--the work of neo-Stalinist Jan Grabowski—that some Poles could be induced to turn-in fugitive Jews by rewarding such Poles with a bag of sugar. In another context, Vidkun Quisling had argued that his collaborative actions had alleviated the privations faced by the Norwegians in German-occupied Norway. The alternative--direct German rule over Norway--would only have made things worse.

Very much the same considerations applied to Jewish-Nazi collaboration. For instance, in describing the infamous Jewish ghetto police in the Lodz ghetto, Jozef Zelkowicz said, (quote) The Jewish police were bought. Then they were gotten drunk and given a kind of hashish: their children were exempted from the deportation decree, and they were provided with a kilo and a half of bread per day in exchange for this bloody piece of work, enough bread to eat their fill and an extra ration of sausage and sugar. At the same time, the police were given a rationale to justify their acts: “If our molars are ripped out, our living limbs chopped off, and our bodies cut in two by our own, familiar Jewish hands, perhaps it will not be as painful as the same acts carried out by strangers, with their rough and dirty ones.” (unquote). (p. 239).

Nowadays, Jewish collaboration with the Nazis is commonly excused by the extreme circumstances (while collaboration of others under German occupation (e. g, Poles), in accordance with the double standard, is not). Interestingly, those Jews who actually went through the Holocaust, and know better than anyone else what it is like to be a Jew trying to survive the Nazis, do not so easily let Jewish collaborators off the hook. For instance, Peretz Opoczynski of the Warsaw Ghetto commented, (quote) Someday the role played by the officials of the Jewish Council—spooning everything of value their own way—will be exposed in the harshest light. These were the corrupt civil servants who would obtain an exemption from forced labor for anyone who had enough hard cash, leaving those without any money to be deported in their place. When everything comes to light, it will also be impossible to hide the shameful role played by the Jewish police, which up until now has been completely silenced. (unquote). (p. 95).

SCALE OF DEATH AT THE LODZ GHETTO ITSELF

According to the editor, Samuel D. Kassow, Lodz had the highest “natural” mortality rate of large Jewish ghettos in German-ruled Poland. Fully 21% of its original inhabitants had died from starvation and disease during its existence (1940-1944). (pp. xxix-xxx).

Therefore, there is no reason to expect processes to change or problems to be solved without policy changes. The processes are ongoing, so changes in undesirable deliveries are dependent on changes in policies. One premise of this book is that too often policy analysis is conducted with knowledge bases and tools that are not appropriate for the task of analyzing and understanding complex socioecological and sociotechnical systems leading to wasted resources, policy failure, and frustration. The conjunction of the complexity of problem contexts and inappropriate policymaking that follows from insufficient analysis has left citizens frustrated and bewildered. Citizens want problems solved, yet they have lost faith in the ability of policymakers to implement solutions necessary to achieve a good society. Another premise is that it is not necessary to continue down that destructive path. In response, the purpose of this book, briefly stated, is to explain how to model, analyze, and make policy for the social fabric in which society's problems are enmeshed.

It describes a method that gives analysts the ability to combine knowledge of social, technological, and ecological systems in order to model real-world complexities that will lead to desirable outcomes.

The author had designed a unique methodology – the social fabric matrix (SFM) – that encourages relevant questions; defines and models a whole that transcends system components and describes their relationship; includes cultural values, social beliefs, and institutional rules; identifies system feedback loops; guides the development of social indicators and builds a database for statistical analysis; coordinates temporal sequences; compares the consequences of alternative policies; and includes the ability to relate research to the broader reality of political action such a lobbying, budgetary processes, and administrative implementation.

A MUST in Social Service Management

This book is by all accounts an OUTSTANDING book. It is very well written and it is very complete.

No matter what type of role you might have in social service management, this book is a must read.

In my case i read this book while designing an information system for the New Mexico Department of Human Services.

The author asserts that technology has yet to produce a good society.

To offer sustainable social service policies that are able to assist those in temporary, in a humane fashion, while respecting society's beliefs and values, requires the participation of engineers, ecologists, economists and other areas, with sociologist, anthropologist. Only the juxtaposition of all areas of science will bare fruit.

The readers should should be tempted to map some of the concepts in book, with corresponding philosophic concepts. I use the The Oxford Companion to Philosophy New Edition.

Also, the book is about Holistic Thinking, or System Thinking. The more the reader knows about this issue, the faster it will be able to understand the full meaning of the book. I recommend reading the The Fifth Discipline: The Art & Practice of The Learning Organization

To increase the understanding social service management, i recommend also that the reader uses another very good book, that it is a lot more practical, Social Policy and Social Programs: A Method for the Practical Public Policy Analyst (4th Edition)

Helpful. Gives dosages and brand recommendations

I was very happy with this book. I appreciate his position on food quality and the role of supplements for preventing and helping with various diseases.

One of my favorite things about the book was that he offers suggestions for how much of a certain supplement to take, as well as what brands he prefers and why. So often one reads books that suggest supplements but don't give that extra information.

I am looking forward to trying his blenderized veggie drink on a more regular basis. I am no stranger to smoothies and healthy eating, but he has inspired me to make it a foundational part of my life. Sometimes people don't think they have the time to make a blended veggie drink on a daily basis so he suggests that you can make a large batch and drink it over the course of many days and he also says you can even freeze it. Those were useful tips.

A Most Valued Health Guide to Naturally Treat Disease

This book by Doctor Blaylock, a neurosurgeon, provided me with some new information, even though I already have two shelves full of health books. It is highly recommended to read Part I before proceeding to Part II (which lists natural remedies, including nutritional supplements, for 70 common conditions). Part I consists of 5 short chapters totaling 39 pages. Chapter 1 gives natural remedy prescriptions for markedly slowing down the aging process. Chapter 2 is about excitotoxins (such as glutamate, found in aspartame) that play a role in many of today's diseases. This chapter was really an eye-opener for me, providing lots of insights, details, and suggestions for ingesting less glutamate. Since reading the book, I have stopped drinking diet and sugary soda pop. Food additives and pesticides are also touched upon. Part II is not short on suggestions of ways to combat and treat 70 diseases and health conditions, including arthritis, diabetes, and even harder to treat and less hopeful conditions such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and various cancers. I have already incorporated a lot of what I've read in this book. Among the several dozen health books I possess, I would rank "Dr. Blaylock's Prescriptions for Natural Health" among my top five favorite and most valued health books, as it offers hope and direction and concrete recommendations by an M.D. It's worth a try!

About the Author

Stuart Shanker is a Distinguished Research Professor of Philosophy and Psychology at York University. Dr. Shanker is currently serving as Director of the Milton and Ethel Harris Research Initiative (MEHRI) at York University, a privately funded initiative whose goal is to build on new knowledge of the brain’s development, and help set children (including those with developmental disorders) on the path towards emotional and intellectual health.

Dr. Shanker has just been appointed the Director of EPIC: an international initiative created to promote the educational potential in children by enhancing their self-regulation. He has served as the Director of the Council of Human Development for the past ten years; Director of the Canada-Cuba Research Alliance for the past six years; and he was the first President of the Council of Early Child Development in Canada. Over the past decade he has served as an advisor on early child development to government organizations across Canada and the US and countries around the world, among them Australia, Colombia, England, Ireland, Macedonia, Madagascar, Mexico, Northern Ireland, Peru, Romania and Serbia. Most notable among these is his involvement in the creation of the new early learning program in Ontario (viz. "The Pascal Report," for which he also wrote the preface).

Self-regulation is a matter for adults working with /caring for children as much as the children themselves!

Very easy to access this book and dip in and out for wisdom.
Particularly relevant for those working with children placed in out of home care.
Shared elements on recent multi-professional training and a forum - well received - provides another lens for supporting children with complex needs. I particularly liked emphasis on adults around the children modelling their own self-regulation and how we need to do a lot of personal development ourselves if we are going to commence or continue to work with this group of children.

the pleasure of finding love and life again

As a woman of a certain age, I can whole-heartedly relate to what Sheila Pearl has written in this fabulous little book. It captures the pain of losing a spouse to degenerative disease, the pleasure of finding love and life again, the thrill of starting over on a new career path, and the hunt for true love again and again and again via internet online dating. It explores the feelings associated with growing older in this ageist culture we live in. The reader comes away with renewed hope, passion, and a sense of awe at the beauty of life and what it has to offer. No matter our age, we are sensuous, passionate, and alive! The energy flowing from this book is incredible! Bravo for a job well done! I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.

It's About Finding True Love

I finally finished Ageless & Sexy last night. Men, stick around because this book is for you, too. I wish every woman would read this book in their 20s. Or for the love of Pete, by their 40s. And as a last-minute Intervention, in their 50s, 60s and beyond. Sheila has encapsulated a lifetime of sensual-spiritual wisdom in its most accessible format. Men, you are not left out of this wisdom, younger men would profit from the sure knowledge that they are not alone in insecurity, in wrestling with sex and sensuality, and that there is a woman (or man...) looking for them to step up to the plate and bring themselves fully to the table, in spite of the damage done by society to men's most precious and tender selves. This book isn't about genderfication, it's about transcending our flesh and being fully present to another, being joined at the spiritual hip to our higher selves, and through that connection, inextricably bound to each other.

And so, this is a book for everyone, all across the spectrum of gender, of sensuality, of sex, of sexuality, of orientation, and all adult ages. Because it's at its core a book about the human spirit and a poignant illustration of the quest for self-love and self-reliance that is the fundamental prerequisite of finding true and lasting love. I am only entering the big 3rd or 4th act of my life, and I can hope that I can approach it with an Ageless & Sexy mindset. Sheila brings us the story of everywoman Stella, struggling with her identity, her sexuality, her sensuality as she watches the calendar pages turn. But she also brings a unique perspective on the male experience of women, as we have a sort of playboy or alter-ego Matt who ignites Stella's fire -- something almost every man wants to do for someone special to them. Is he a part of Stella, the inner ignition that we all have, the fantasy lover we can use to light our inner flame, and sometimes our most critical and self-sabotaging ego that focuses on the passage of time, additional weight, oncoming wrinkles -- or is he a real person? A real page-turner that ignites the imagination, that lights our desires, that makes us look at our partner and ourselves in a whole new light.

Ok first of all I've learned to make sure I read the synopsis of each book I buy, not just look at the cover and I also read a mix of the reviews (if any available) This book was just what I needed full of hott sex, yes some harsh punishments but that's what I like to read about. It's the right length and price. Right now healing from a broken ankle this was perfect. No over thinking things....
