In a class all its own

Dr. Young-Eisendrath's thesis is that ours is the first era in history when men and women en masse have the potential to have emotionally intimate, honest relationships. In the past the power in a male-female relationship was too off balance for true intimacy.
Since this potential is a recent phenomenon, very few models exist for a gender-opposite relationship based on equality. The good doctor builds such a model, based on extensive research, and it is flexible enough for all of us.

Too much jargon!

I was hoping the book would have been more reader-friendly, especially for those of us not well-versed in Jungian psychoanalysis. The jargon is nearly impossible to get through. I think I understand the main points, but I'm not finding it very helpful overall. I have a MA in English, and am a Research Associate at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, so I'm used to reading dense texts.

An Important Premise

Wow! I cannot believe this phenomenal book has only one review (so far, or right now) I ordered it after reading another title by the same author ('Resilient Spirit' - another very worthwhile book, by the way, about transforming suffering into growth & insight... and that topic applies to just about everybody on the planet, eh? After all, the very fundamental premise of Buddhism is that suffering is a cold hard fact. How we learn to deal with it, understand it, approach it, and ourselves, etc is the important work of each lifetime and yes in addition to being a Jungian analyst the author is also a follower of the Buddhist path.) Now, back to this book: I ordered it after reading 'Resilient Spirit' and by the time I had read the first 100 or so pages I wanted to share it with nearly everyone I know... I was thinking "Everyone could benefit from this!" I ended up loaning my copy to my therapist who immediately made many approving sounds about the author's premise (at least in the introduction).

Seriously, anyone who is in a relationship, married, dating, whatever, could benefit from what Ms Eisendrath shares in this book. It won't necessarily be an easy ride but it will open up some (many!) eyes and many hearts (hopefully!) with it's clear and patient wisdom. AND the amazing thing is - looking at the prices above here... one can have a copy of this for less that is cost to print the thing!

Eisendrath's basic premise in "You're Not What I Expected" starts with true gender equality which historically has not been possible until recently because of entrenched cultural attitudes and biases. Let's grow, let's evolve, let's move into the next logical phase of human development (one that is long long overdue!) by taking advantage of this historical opportunity for actual equality and real partnership with our most intimate companions. If you've read Riane Eisler's "Power of Partnership" check this book, it is sure to be of interest to you and will expand your thinking (and feeling) on a topic that it both important and "close to home."

The merger had no effect on the confidentiality regulations. Throughout this document, references to the confidentiality law or regulations will mean the regulations at title 42, part 2. . .

I like the simple layout and the large font

This book is older -- published in 1993 -- but I still prefer it over most other newer books. I like the simple layout and the large font, and I really appreciate the fact that there aren't any distracting instructions and headings. For those reasons, the book is better than most for adult students at a low literacy level. However, the book doesn't teach phonics or alphabet skills and is difficult to manage for low level readers unless there is a lot of verbal role playing and practice before you direct students to open the book to look at the conversation. I use this book to supplement life skills lessons for low literacy learners, because I haven't found a better option yet.

I like to use the abc English books (teachabcenglish.com) to teach reading and phonics, and the books pair pretty well together -- if students can start to get some alphabet sound and decoding skills, they can start to make sense of a book like "Survival English" as long as you present the Survival English text after presenting the meaning and practice up front before reading.

If you love running, if you are a cancer survivor, or if you know someone else who is, Donna Deegan's "Through Rose Colored Glasses" should be on your reading list. Buy it now!

Donna Deegan is an anchorwoman on First Coast News in Jacksonville, Florida. She is also organizer of "Run 26.2 with Donna," the National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer. This is Donna's second book. In an earlier book, "The Good Fight," she described twice battling and beating breast cancer. "Rose Colored" continues where the first book stopped, describing a third encounter with cancer just as she was organizing her marathon in its first year, 2008.

The first third of "Through Rose Colored Glasses" covers the discovery and treatment of Donna's third cancer bout. The second third covers the marathon, organizing and running it. The third part covers the race afterward, Donna's faith and belief in a holistic approach to healing.

I enjoyed the first part the most, because it allowed me to peer into the mind of a cancer victim--before she knew she would be a cancer survivor. First, you cry (to borrow the title of another book on breast cancer). Then you go to a hospital like Mayo Clinic, where the doctors understand what you're facing. Then you get on with the rest of your life, hopefully learning from the experience.

What intrigued me was the "fear" Donna felt after first diagnose. Well, who wouldn't experience fear? People die from cancer. But also showing through the pages was what an uptight lady Donna Deegan was. She has a high stress job, working as TV anchor. Her husband Tim is a meteorologist on the same station. I sensed that part of Donna's fear was not so much the threat against her life or physical beauty, but the threat it posed to Tim and her two growing children.

Now looking toward its fourth year, Run 26.2 With Donna has the potential to become a great Destination Marathon. Beautiful Course. Good time of year for a race in Florida. Superbly organized. Fun. Most attractive, the entry fees of runners and more goes into research to not merely fight breast cancer, but to finish it.

Books often work best when they move the reader from A to Z, from one reality to another. Homer figured this out when he created "The Odyssey." Most interesting in the closing chapters about Donna's current life is that she seems to have thrust the "fear" demonstrated in the opening chapters out of her life. Still in that high-stress job, Donna seems less the high-stress lady. I love to see it when she posts pictures on her Facebook page of sunrises over the Atlantic Ocean.

I hope Donna Deegan lives to see a lot of them.

It supported an amazing airlift of food and arms, second only to the Berlin Airlift of 1948. Fusing first hand accounts and much original documentation this is the story of a conflict which the world did not want to happen, but one which the illegal international arms trade wanted never to end. Michael Draper was briefly involved in the airlift to Biafra during 1968 and was later involved with an attempt to ferry other aircraft there. The concept of Shadows emerged during conversations with pilots and other personnel engaged in organizing flights to and from Biafra. Draper has researched the subject for almost thirty years, often with assistance from various illegal gunrunners. Air war in the nigerian civil war

This book is the best book about the Nigerian civil war written.
It is very detailed with a very complet information about the activities of the diferent aircraft in this war. It give information about the aerial operations of both parties but the book is focusing in the biafran side.
I recomend this book to all people interested in the african conflicts and especially in the air war.

Incredibly detailed reference book

Bought this book at a local brick and mortar store because i got tired of having to go online and research mythological persons, places, etc. This book has it all from Norse, to Greek, to native American... heck it even has King Arthur! Tons of photographs, easy to read pages, easy to understand info ...its just an all around incredible book to have. Highly recommended.

Very extensive! I have read and studied different mythology for many years, but this book combined so many different religions and beliefs that it is a go to source. From Greek mythology, to Germanic, even Egyptian and with so many others you will be amazed. Great book do not miss out.

One of the current generation of uncategorizable European "food creatives," London-based Sabrina Ghayour writes, teaches and hosts supper clubs, all the while staunchly advocating for the Persian cuisine she had to teach herself despite growing up surrounded by it. Ghayour interpets the many species of rice dishes and long-simmered stews in a way that's more approachable than what you'll find in traditional Persian cookbooks; when she ventures elsewhere in the Mediterranean (bastillas, kebabs, baklava, tabbouleh) she paves the way with smart substitutions and thoughtful headnotes. And she remains true to her palette pomegranate, dates, barberries, saffron, pistachio, dill even when experimenting with Western forms (as in pistachio-rose-raspberry madeleines). I ve come down with a strange disease for which their may be no cure. Call it a case of the creeping Ottolenghis.

Ever since I started cooking from British chef and cookbook writer Yotam Ottolenghi s phenomenal Plenty a couple of years ago, I ve found my tastes shifting gradually eastward. I'm reaching for feta and mint instead of mozzarella and basil. Rice and whole grains are taking the place of dried pasta. And I m buying tahineh and yogurt in what seems like industrial quantities.

Still, even as my dinners are becoming progressively lighter, brighter and more herbaceous, I find myself wanting to push even further into the cooking of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.

Fortunately, it seems the Ottolenghi effect has not escaped the notice of the publishing industry either here or in Britain. Four cookbooks have crossed my desk recently that go beyond the yogurt curtain.

Any of them would make a terrific gift for anyone on your list who has been similarly infected.

When I interviewed Ottolenghi for a Live Talks L.A. program this fall, he singled out Persiana by Sabrina Ghayour as one book he was especially excited about. Selected as the best cookbook of 2014 by Observer Food Monthly, it has just been published in the U.S. by Interlink Books.

It s easy to see why Ottolenghi is so excited about it. Ghayour s food is both sophisticated and approachable a tough line to tread, particularly with cuisines and ingredients that might be unfamiliar. But consider a dish like her tagine of lamb, butternut squash, prune and tamarind it's just 11 ingredients including spices, but the flavors jump off the page. Even simpler and maybe even more compelling shrimp sauteed after a quick marination in sumac, cilantro, lemon and garlic. --Russ Parsons, LA Times

Beautiful Collection of Personalized Traditional Recipes, Plus More!

I fell in love with Iranian food back in my college days--pre-revolution--when my Persian friends cooked their mothers' home recipes for me. I found it fresh, flavorful, beautiful on the plate, and full of surprises. Fast forward many years and I have accumulated a shelf full of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cookbooks, many of them exclusively Persian. I love this cuisine so much, complex yet simple, refined yet rustic--consider it one of the greats, right up there with Mexican/French/Italian--that I find a new Persian cookbook hard to resist. It is an irresistible collection.

For all you picture hounds, there is a full-page color picture of the completed dish for every recipe. That's right. Every...single...one. (I keep Kindle for PC installed on both my laptop and desktop computers for just such books as this. The pictures look good on my Kindle Fire (the 7" one), but they look spectacular on a large HD monitor. Every little detail... You foodies know what of I speak. Sigh!)

Ingredients are given in both metric and American tsp/tblsp/ounces etc. (I read somewhere recently that the U.S. is one of three countries left hanging on to non-metric measurements. Surely we will eventually bow to the majority, but I hope it's after I'm no longer cooking. In the meantime all my new kitchen measuring cups and spoons have both standards clearly imprinted, so I don't miss out, or get confused. Just a suggestion...) The whole cookbook has been edited with the view to international distribution. But, the one thing, the only thing, I've found which wasn't "translated" for Americans is the oven temperature, which is given in Centigrade and "gas mark". But the internet is full of converters, so no biggie.

Mezze (appetizers,etc.)--19 recipes
Breads and Grains--9 recipes
Soups, Stews, and Tagines--12 recipes
Roasts and Grills--22 recipes
Salads and Vegetables--26 recipes
Desserts and Sweet Treats--12 recipes
A grand total of 100 and I'm determined to cook my way through all of them.

There are a number of recipes for lamb, but beef can be easily substituted, a lesson learned from an old American friend married to an Iranian who always said she was a better cook than his mother (high praise indeed). I live in a small town, surrounded by small towns, where a variety of lambs cuts are expensive and not readily available. I don't know if the author would approve; I just know it can be done. (If you're interested, the book which made my friend into a "better than my mother's" Persian cook is "Persian Cooking" by Nesta Ramazani and is still in print and available on Amazon. It's fabulous beyond words and thorough, but be warned, there are no pictures.)

Any unfamiliar spices (sumac, for example) are easily obtainable online from vendors like Penzey's (the best, IMHO). Persians are very fond of fresh herbs in quantity, nothing unusual, but if you fall in love with this cuisine, you might want to grow some of your own, quite easily done in pots on a window sill in a pinch.

Just a few words about rice cooked Persian style: It is heavenly. Fluffy, tender, toothsome, aromatic, every grain separate from its neighbor. Fixed plain or fancy, it is hands-down the best prepared rice I've ever eaten. And it reheats beautifully for leftovers. You will never fix rice any other way.

This isn't a collection full of ingredients that you've never heard of or wouldn't recognize on the grocery shelf. The recipes are clearly written, easy to follow. Techniques are simple and successful results should be well within the reach of the average home cook. This would be a fine introduction to one of the world's great cuisines. Highest recommendation!

Great (veg-friendly) Food Without the Fussiness

I am a big fan of the Ottolenghi cookbooks - Jerusalem, in particular - and over the last few years, I've come to love the flavor profiles of food from the Middle East and Central Asia. However, as much as I love the recipes in Jerusalem, they are definitely 'weekend' recipes - I have yet to make anything that took less than 45 minutes, and I often feel as if I need a sous chef. The great thing about Persiana is that you have a similar intensity of flavor and liberal use of spices, herbs, and vegetables, but the recipes are a lot more user-friendly.

I especially recommend this cookbook for "mixed" (i.e. vegetarians and meat-eaters) households, as there is enough in here to keep everybody happy. Although, TBH, I think there are just about enough hearty non-meat dishes in here to justify the purchase even for strictly vegetarian households.

I really love this book as the recipes are so diversified and easy to follow. I look through it each time I want to prepare something unique and delicious. And I have all the ingredients already in my pantry. Great book to give as a gift to someone who appreciates fine cuisine. I can definitely say it is one of my favorites and the photos are great alongside the recipes.
