Good, but there's better ways...

I'll start with saying that I got a 780 on the Biology SAT test. I purchased both this book and the barron's book. I would recommend buying both if you wish to score in the 700's, especially in the high 700's. The Barron's book has a better sense of the test, and the PR book has a bit more information, with more extraneous information. Ultimately the test will differ from any books. However the Princeton will prepare you very well. Also, most of the people in my class that scored in the 700's used this book.

In my case in one month and a half of studying, with both books i could produce very good results. This book will help you to learn the format of the test and how to take advantage of it, as well as reinforcing your knowledge of the material as well. You will not regret buying this book

It didn't help much once I took that SAT Bio ...

It didn't help much once I took that SAT Bio on May 2. Had to rely on my AP knowledge to get me through the test. Had too much extraneous info that was not even mentioned. Of the entire book, only 1/4 of it kinda helped.

About the Author
Iris Murdoch was born in Dublin in 1919. She read Classics at Somerville College, Oxford, and after working in the Treasury and abroad, was awarded a research studentship in philosophy at Newnham College, Cambridge. In 1948 she returned to Oxford as fellow and tutor at St Anne's College and later taught at the Royal College of Art. Until her death in 1999, she lived in Oxford with her husband, the academic and critic, John Bayley. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1987 and in the 1997 PEN Awards received the Gold Pen for Distinguished Service to Literature. Iris Murdoch made her writing debut in 1954 with Under the Net. Her twenty-six novels include the Booker prize-winning The Sea, The Sea (1978), the James Tait Black Memorial prize-winning The Black Prince (1973) and the Whitbread prize-winning The Sacred and Profane Love Machine (1974). Her philosophy includes Sartre: Romantic Rationalist (1953) and Metaphysics as a Guide to Morals (1992); other philosophical writings, including The Sovereignty of Good (1970), are collected in Existentialists and Mystics (1997).

Will you like this book?

Even though I gave this five stars, that does not mean that everyone will like this book.

You are more likely to enjoy this book if you can enjoy a book with long, wandering descriptions, stream of consciousness such as Ulysses, or a meandering through someone else's life,. . I think that older people will understand the book better than younger people.

If you need a plot, excitement, or need to understand what is going on at all times, this is not the book for you.

I had to interrupt my reading of this book several times. I read it on Kindle and highlighted, not the great passages, but items that seemed significant in terms of understanding the characters and what was going on. In fact, after reading about 100 pages, I went back and skimmed/highlighted. This was helpful, especially since my reading was interrupted. I read the last 10% after a break of almost 5 months and was able to pick right up on the story. It seems that this would be a good way to read the book: read a bit and put it aside, then go back and read a bit more, or flip through the earlier parts and re read. If you are the type of person who thinks about life, and meaning, then you will enjoy this. I don't think I would have enjoyed this when I was younger, although, who knows? I have gone back and read many books that I read in my 20s and they seem to be different books. Maybe this book would be the same: one book for a young person and another for an older person. If a young person can get through it, it might be very educational and even helpful- not as a moral guide, but to put perspective on one's own life as it is lived.

I'm going to make a stab at saying what this book is about. There are several summaries of the "plot". The interesting thing is that many of them vary except in the basic outlines. That is because one's reaction to this book is going to vary according to the level at which one reads it. I have only a superficial acquaintance with philosophy or mythology and several other areas of knowledge. I sense that there are many levels of understanding this book and no one will have access to all of them. What I do have is a broad experience of life, so that is what I was able to understand in this book.

What I think is going on here is that Charles is talking about parts of his life, with an emphasis on his obsession with Hartley, a woman whom he loved as a young man, and whom he may still love. That is the superficial story. Meanwhile, other people come and go in his life. Many of them are also obsessed, often with him. Sometimes they are obsessed with other aspects of life: the theater, Buddhism, patriotism. Each time they come into his life, he thinks differently about them and often they are thinking differently about him. Unlike many novels, in this book, many of the "minor" characters have a character arc. The the arc is not like one that is satisfying in a Hollywood movie, it is an arc that is more closely aligned with the arc of one's life. It can be satisfying, or surprising, or stupid.

As different things happen in his life, he reflects upon his relationship with Hartley differently,which serves to inform us,not so much about Hartley, as about the lead character and his own development. In the same way, the sea is not an objective inanimate object, but Charles' relationship with the sea reflects his mood and his thoughts. Charles also has many relationships with others. They start out at one point and continue to grow and develop in their own, separate lives. As they develop, they relate to him differently and he also changes his opinion about them, sometimes based on a re-thinking of past events, and sometimes in reaction to changes in that person. In the end, perhaps there is an answer, or perhaps it is random and doesn't make a neat story-like life.

Nabokov once said something along the lines of that one needs to read a novel at least twice to truly understand it. This is one of the books that will bear re-reading and will probably give gifts on a second, third, or even fifth reading. It is great literature, and a great experience, but not for everyone.

The Writing Carries the Story

Aside from the story, which takes a while to pick up steam, I became attached to the book for the quality of the writing. It is nearly 500 pages, and Iris Murdoch describes the sea throughout, never repeating the descriptions. I actually lost the book when I was about 100 pages into the story, and I bought another copy rather than starting up one of the numerous novels waiting to be read on my shelf. Murdoch so overshadows most writers that it took me a while before I could begin another novel. I just savored the language and her way or forming sentences and imagery for a couple of weeks. I think really good writing deserves that, the way really finely prepared food or wine deserves to be savored.

Iris Murdoch was my favourite author of the '70s

Iris Murdoch was my favourite author of the '70s. I decided to reread some of her works and have started with "The Sea The Sea".
Often when one rereads a book they read earlier in their lives, one is disappointed. However, that was not the case here.
Her erudition is next to none, but her writing flows easily. Her characters seem larger than life, but, on reflection, they are really the same people we have around us, and of course even ourselves. Through these characters, she examines the human condition with amazing plots and twists and turns. Still one of my very favourite authors. I always feel sorry when one of her books end, and live with it for days after.

Grumpy Badger Makes Good in Time for Christmas

All Badger wants to do is go to sleep; he doesn't care about Christmas. It's his time to go underground and sleep all winter through. When his animal friends come knocking on his door trying to bring presents and asking to borrow his ladder to decorate a Christmas tree, he angrily sends them away. "Piffle!" he shouts. "I don't like presents and I don't like Christmas!"

But then one of them shows up to ask for his help because Mole is stuck on top of the tree he was trying to decorate. Again, Grumpy Badger wants to be left alone, so he closes the door and goes back to sleep... but he has a terrible dream that Mole is about to fall out of the tree. When he startles himself awake, he realizes what a bad friend he's been, rushes out to save Mole, and apologizes to everyone for being so grumpy.

To make it up to them, he throws a wonderful Christmas party, which he intends to make an annual tradition.

The story's only possible flaw is that badgers don't actually hibernate. They're less active in cold weather, and sometimes stay underground for long stretches, but they don't sleep through the winter as it suggests in this book. If you forgive this bit of artistic license... and the fact that the text can be a little hard to read against the background on some pages... it's a winner all the way. A solid message, an entertaining story, and nicely expressive acrylic paintings.

I love this book!

This is such a great children's book! I read it to my little sister and she absolutely loved it! If you are a teacher I would recommend ou to read this book with your class around the holiday season! It is adjustable to all age groups. With this book you can teach children valuable lessons as well as having some fun around the holidays!

Definitely a unique story

Others have said this is based on "A Christmas Carol" but please understand it is only very loosely related. It's a cute story with fun illustrations, but meanders a little bit and doesn't leave much of an impression. But if your kid is fascinated with badgers (mine is) that's all it will take to make it a hit.

About the Author

WYNN KAPIT

Wynn Kapit, the designer and illustrator of this book, has had careers in law, graphic and advertising design, painting, and teaching.

����� In 1955, he graduated from law school, with honors, from the University of Miami and was admitted to the Florida Bar. He practiced law both before and after military service. Four years later, he decided to pursue a childhood ambition and enrolled at what is now the Art Center College in Los Angeles, where he studied graphic design. Afterwards, he worked in the New York advertising world for six years as a designer and art director. He “dropped out” in the late 1960s, returned to California, and began painting. His numerous exhibitions included a one-man show at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1968. He returned to school and received a master’s degree in painting from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972.

����� Kapit was teaching figure drawing in Adult Ed in San Francisco in 1975 when he decided he needed to learn more about bones and muscles. He enrolled in Dr. Elson’s anatomy class at San Francisco City College. While he was a student, he created the word-and-illustration coloring format that seemed to be a remarkably effective way of learning the subject. He showed some layouts to Dr. Elson and indicated his intention to do a coloring book on bones and muscles for artists. Immediately recognizing the potential of this method, Dr. Elson encouraged Kapit to do a “complete” coloring book on anatomy and offered to collaborate on the project. The first edition of The Anatomy Coloring Book was published in 1977, and its immediate success inspired the development of a completely new field of publishing: educational coloring books.

����� Kapit went on to create The Physiology Coloring Book with the assistance of two professors who were teaching at Berkeley: Dr. Robert I. Macey and Dr. Esmail Meisami. That book was published in 1987 and has gone through two editions. In the early 1990s, Kapit wrote and designed The Geography Coloring Book, now in its second edition.

LAWRENCE M. ELSON

Lawrence M. Elson, PhD, planned the content and organization, provided sketches, and wrote the text for the book. This is his seventh text, having authored It’s Your Body and The Zoology Coloring Book and co-authored The Human Brain Coloring Book and The Microbiology Color ing Book. He received his BA in zoology and pre-med at the University of California at Berkeley and continued there to receive his PhD in human anatomy. Dr. Elson was assistant professor of anatomy at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, participated in the development of the Physician’s Assistant Program, lectured and taught dissection anatomy at the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, and taught general anatomy, from protozoons to humans, at City College of San Francisco.

����� In his younger days, Dr. Elson trained to become a naval aviator and went on to fly dive-bombers off aircraft carriers in the Western Pacific. While attending college and graduate school, he remained in the Naval Air Reserve and flew antisubmarine patrol planes and helicopters. His last position in his 20-year Navy career was as commanding officer of a reserve antisubmarine helicopter squadron.

����� Dr. Elson is a consultant to insurance companies and personal injury and medical malpractice attorneys on causation-of-injury/death issues, a practice that has taken him throughout the United States and Canada. He has testified in hundreds of personal injury trials and arbitrations. His research interests are focused on the anatomic bases of myofascial pain arising from low velocity accidents.

Learning Hints, not previously stated by others

IMPORTANT: Make sure you READ ALL the information in the section labeled "INTRODUCTION TO COLORING" BEFORE you start coloring your first page. This is located on pages "xii" and "xiii" in the front of the 4th edition. This book is very well thought out and there really is a "method to the madness" if you actually read and follow the directions.
I've found it beneficial to read through all the NAMES first, checking for parts that have similar names. Second, choose SIMILAR COLORS for SIMILAR NAMES or FUNCTIONS. For example, I chose Red, Orange and Yellow for the "Levators"; 2 colors of Blue for the "Zygomaticus Major" and "Zygomaticus Minor"' and 2 shades of Brown for the "Depressors" (page 44). Then look over the basic diagram to get a feel for the order which they appear in the body. Assign the colors in order by location in the diagram. For instance, go from back to front as follows: Red (back), Orange (middle) then Yellow (front). This natural color transition helps solidify the order they appear from postier to anterior or superior to inferior (whatever the case may be) etc. NOTE: I realize this takes extra time planning your colors, but it really makes it easier to memorize when there is a consistant plan in place for what the colors visually symbolize.
Finally, color in the Name First then repeat the names while coloring in that particular portion of the diagram. . I also underline the names on the left page the same as the diagram color - just makes it faster to locate if I want to look for something later...not necessary, but nice.
I pre-ordered my book as I wanted the newest edition. I LOVE MY BOOK and ended up having to order a couple of extras as gifts for my "nurse" friends who wanted a fun way to refresh their memory too!

Great supplement for any anatomy course

I am using this book as a study tool for my Gross Anatomy course. Anyone who has taken an anatomy class can tell you that color-coding structures is one of the most helpful ways to remember them. There are drawings of bones, muscles, joints, organ systems and explanations of virtually everything that could possibly be covered in an anatomy class. The drawings are excellent and most of the features of the bones are labelled as well. This was very helpful to me since I had to memorize virtually every tubercle, ridge, groove, or other protuberance on every bone of the body. When I had trouble with the skull because the drawings in my class notes were horrible, the drawings in this book were much clearer and helped out a lot. If you are taking an anatomy class, this is a smart and relatively inexpensive investment that will help you remember everything better.

EXACTLY what I wanted!

What a great book! Very detailed in it's drawings, and labeling. It tells you how to color a small amount of the specific part you are coloring, and then it tells you to use lite colors on the rest. So on the rest, you can use what ever colors you want.

I also bought Crayola 50ct Long Colored Pencils to use,(like another reviewer suggested) and they are perfect!
