Not for "actual" records........

I was really excited about getting this book and once I opened it, I quickly discovered that this was NOT what I was hoping it would be! If you're looking for "records" such as "Best-selling LIPS track" or "First Xbox 360 Movie Karaoke Game" then you're in LUCK! And yes,...those ARE, in fact, actual records included in this book. You can find records of best scores and such, but they are included at the very end and are hardly even recognized. All in all, I should've sent the book back, but maybe my 9 year old nephew will like it?!

lazy, blatant marketing

What can I say, picked this up at a garage sale. Upon opening the book it was very clear why it was there. It is a very lazy effort, with mostly records such as "Best Selling __________" or "First ___________".

Some of the lists provided are things that are subjective and are strangely places in a record book. Most of these lists also seem to lean toward the promotion of current games. If you are looking for something meaningful to an actual gamer stay away, if you are looking for an advertizement in book form then this is right up your alley.

This book is the ultimate record book for all things gaming. With the many records, the awesome scoreboards by Twin Galaxies, and the overall awesome creation, this book is the one to get.

Though it may be 2012's Edition, it still holds records that may not have been shown in 2013's.

I recommend this book to gamers who want a challenge.

Loved It!

This was absolutely a very cute book! Also, a must-read for any woman who has been in a relationship (even if they are currently in one). Jennifer Love Hewitt uses her personal experiences from her MANY publicized relationships with men to shed a little light on all the intricacies of dating, all the good stuff and bad stuff, and even the 'Why didn't I think of that?' stuff in relationships. This does not mean that JLH is telling you "HOW IT IS" and that there is no other way, she is just giving her own little perspective.

In the end this book is meant to make you feel better about your past relationships, even if they went horribly wrong, because everyone goes through them. There is even a part where she lets a man speak for himself (Jammie Kennedy - even though they were no longer together when this book came out). One of the important things to take from this book is that everyone is different, including men. Also, we are not alone. Plain and simple. Throughout her advice and perspective, JLH also provides little tips that she found successful, while stating that these might not work for everyone.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun, quick, heartfelt read with no lies written in the pages.

Jennifer Love Hewitt = Love Guru

Self-proclaimed Love-aholic, Jennifer Love Hewitt, has penned this adorable little book for all you girls looking for love in all the wrong places. In its pages you'll find all sorts of advice from what to wear on a first to what not to eat or drink while you're on it. How to wait for him to call. How to not be overly needy. Feeling worthless. When to snuggle like "velcro" and then act all nonchalant about it. It is a tell-all book about all the "do's" and "don'ts" in relationships... or lack thereof. Her stories were insightful, witty, and humorous that not only give you a glimpse into some of her relationship woes but can also be helpful in avoiding some of those same painful and/or embarrassing scenarios.

Although I'm one of the lucky one's who has been married for years and considers herself to be in happy, healthy relationship with her "hubs", I can definitely appreciate a book like this. I loved the cutesy graphics, the short chapters and the bullet-point areas all told in a spunky, yet honest voice. My favorite part, Jamie Kennedy's cameo - definitely makes a girl feel good about herself and puts a big smile on your face.

This was a sweet little book that can be read in a couple of hours tops, but definitely not to be taken as light reading material as there are many lessons to be learned scattered throughout. Jennifer Love Hewitt has outdone herself in my book with her amazing love guru-ness skills. She definitely knows what she's talking about and I'm hopeful we'll hear more from her in the future.

I really love Jennifer Love Hewitt...as an actress.
I tried to read all of her book, but had to stop. It was poorly written and somewhat juvenile reading.
It was as if a 12 year old watched a Sex and the City marathon and decided to write a book and
tell it to her Uncle. It was very awkward to try and read.

A swing and a miss

"Is your faith for real?" asks pastor Jarrid Wilson in his new book Jesus Swagger. I'll admit, the cards were stacked against this book from the get-go. Everything pointed to a trendy, fluffy "Christian" book that has little of substance to say. At the same time, this effect can be done well (See Trip Lee's Rise for a good example), so I decided to give Wilson a chance. In the end, is his challenge to 'break free from poser Christianity' worth the effort? Read on for more.

The book starts out strong. Nothing contradicts the Bible, and Wilson is pretty grounded in the gospel and what Christ did on the cross to effect our salvation. But the further I read, the more I was disappointed. While Wilson defines 'swagger' as "A person's style--the way they walk, talk, and dress," it's pretty clear the title was picked out by a marketing team for the shock value of it all. In fact, as time went on, Wilson watered the term down more deeply, until he was challenging the reader to "start finding your inner Jesus swagger."

This characterizes much of the book: an individualistic, pathos-heavy attempt to sell Christianity as something desirable, and shake much of the bad image that's plagued it throughout the centuries. But Wilson undercuts his own call to radical Christianity by attempting to package it with a trendy bow. The style of the book apologizes for the very content he's trying to put across. Yes, nothing he says contradicts the Bible, but it's wrapped up in so much fluff that any impact from his message is obscured.

As the book went on, problems deepened, which reflect where mainline Christianity is today. Sanctification is all-but-ignored, and while Wilson has plenty to say about God accepting flawed people (and challenging us to do the same), he has little to say about God's promise to strip of us sin and change us. Yes, he accepts us where we are, but he will change us, in ways that hurt, and Wilson glosses over that in favor of a feel-good, all-accepting 'love' that fails to capture how God views sin.

Wilson also glosses over theology, almost dismissing it as the product of denominational strife. So uncool. But what he fails to note is that by refusing to interact with doctrine, he again undercuts his own message. Doctrine is the polarizing factor of Christianity, but it's also the burning core of what we believe, and downplaying it to sound palatable weakens Wilson's overall message. I don't doubt that Wilson is a Christian, but the way he presents his book -- as a 'getting-started guide' for those unfamiliar or hostile to the church -- opens the door to a lot of roads that look nothing like true Christianity.

Ultimately, Jesus Swagger has too many flaws to make it worth recommending. There are just too many books that do a much better job of introducing Christianity as a whole. Most recently, Trip Lee's Rise is a fantastic, very accessible book that doesn't dilute doctrine and is biblically rooted. Joshua Harris' Dug Down Deep is another great example. If you've more of a philosophical bent, both Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton and Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis do a great job of balancing relevance with reverence for what makes Christianity Christianity. I'd highly recommend checking out one of these books before picking up Wilson's.

Review: Jesus Swagger: Break Free from Poser Christianity

Swagger? “ A person’s style---the way they walk, talk, dress” is the definition Wilson chose to use for this work. OK. Not liking the word much, but we’ll go with it for now. See if works or not.

The subtitle is where the book goes with the swagger idea. Real or fake. Arrogant or humble. Inclusive or exclusive even. That’s the kind of look he explores in his book. Perhaps the thin layer of respectable Christianity that has been around for a while has failed often enough for some folks to look for something more. And that is where Wilson steps into the discussion.

Wilson along with other authors have explored this topic a lot recently. Maybe it is time to step back and check out where we are in this and then decide what comes next. I applaud him and them for saying what has been painfully obvious to those outside the church for a long time. Talk and walk don’t match. Who needs that? Nobody. And the mainline denominations are feeling the pinch.

Wilson’s treatment is adequate, but uneven, I think, perhaps as an effort to avoid sounding preachy. I found myself skimming large sections and then slowing down to hear what he has to say in other spots.

So in the end does “swagger” work? This author objects to the use of homeboy in relationship to Jesus near the end of this book and says, “…I don’t think homeboy is something that magnifies the importance of his being….Jesus is not your homeboy.” (147-8). He has more to say in that vein but I’ll leave that for you to read. Sorry, Jarrid, using swagger and especially an urban dictionary definition strikes me the same way.

Do I recommend this book? A reserved yes. If you want to soft place to start exploring the topic, this one is it.

Swing, Swang, Swagger

Jesus Swagger: Break Free From Poser Christianity by Jarrid Wilson seeks to challenge Christ-followers to live authentic, Christian lives. The author calls readers to be different; to “walk tall with a righteous swagger; a Jesus swagger.” He adds, “Jesus swagger is all about your life being infected with the love of Christ.”

Jesus Swagger is clearly seeking to reach a high school/college audience. The author has a way of communicating important truths in a way that will surely reel the target audience in. It has a hipster feel and is laced with theological nuggets along the way.

Jesus Swagger calls readers to a Christian lifestyle which is genuine and in line with Scriptural mandates. Yet some of the content comes off as irreverent and too casual.

Some of the doctrinal matters discussed fall short. For instance, the author attempts to wrestle with the doctrine of the Holy Spirit but wanting to play “both ends for the middle,” ends up leaving readers with more questions than answers.

Wilson’s work is written with the best intentions and includes some basic principles for living the Christian life. Unfortunately, I could not get past the notion of “Jesus Swagger.” While the author has authentic Christianity in mind, the very notion of “swagger” smells like the world’s system. The swagger factor does not naturally lead one to think of humble, loving, merciful, and God-centered Christianity.

About the Author
Xiao-Hua Zhou, PhD, is Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Washington and Director and Research Career Scientist at the Biostatistics Unit of the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Healthcare System. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the author of more than 100 published articles on statistical methods in diagnostic medicine and causal inferences.

Nancy A. Obuchowski, PhD, is Vice Chairperson of the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association, she has written more than 100 journal articles on the design and analysis of studies of screening and diagnostic tests.

Donna K. McClish, PhD, is Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in Biostatistics at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has written more than 100 journal articles on statistical methods in epidemiology, diagnostic medicine, and health services research.

And the winner is...

There are two modern books in the field. This one by Profs Zhou, Obuchowski, McClish and the book by Prof. Pepe. All four are experts in this field. Both books present the same aspects of statistical diagnostic testing and both can be of invaluable help for researchers (both applied and more academic) and graduate students. However, Professor Pepe has done an excellent job (if I may) using a clear, concise notation and language throughout. On the other hand this book (ZOM) is not that well written, giving more weight in the presentation of the personal research of the authors. As a result there is some notation inconsistency (not too puzzling though) and the flow of the text is not that smooth. Both books have full reference lists, they present interesting applications and give a number of exercises at the end of each chapter.

comprehensive and rigorous

Another reviewer has compared this book with the one by Pepe but is not aware of the book by Broemeling. I reviewed Broemelings book and have this one so in addition to discussing the features of the Zhou-Obuchowski-McClish book I will make some comments comparing it to Lyle Broemeling's book.

Although this book was published in 2002 it is still very contemporary and useful. Both the classical and Bayesian approaches are covered but the details of Bayesian approaches using MCMC methods is not here so if you are interested in that it is well-covered in Broemeling's book. This book is comprehensive and rigorous and show all the modern techniques including the bootstrap. A published article on a bootstrap approach to a diagnostic testing problem involving a mixed linear model is covered in detail and critiqued for depending on an independence assumption.

What I like most about the are the last two chapters 11 and 12. This is material I have not seen before with chapter 11 showing the types of bias that can occur when the gold standard is imperfect (a very common problem given very thorough answers here). Chapter 12 provides statistical methods for habdling multiple studies for evaluating 1) sensitivity and specificity for a diagnostic test and 2) ROC area estimates ofor a diagnostic test using fixed and random effects models.

Also chapter 6 provides methods for estimating sample size when determining area under ROC curves and sensitivity and specificity for single tests, comparisons of two tests, determining equivalence of two tests and more. Methods are illustrated using real examples.

At a time when biomarkers are starting to be used as diagnostics this methodology becomes extremely important.

Mandatory reading for clinical research on screening

I ordered this book along with Pepe's text in 2006, shortly after completing a clinical research fellowship in epidemiology. The two books together provide a strong basis for research on screening tools and risk assessment. Clinical research fellows and junior investigators who plan to study screening need to read this book and practice diagnostic accuracy analysis because it will teach you universal skills in evaluation and interpretation of studies of screening. The two diagnostic accuracy analyses I have published were part of the pilot data for my first of 3 NIH grants, so the material you learn from this book will also inform grants.
