Not what I was looking for

This book is chock full of incredible diverse baby names, which may be what some people are looking for. I, however, am not looking for Arabic, Greek, Korean, Indian, Turkish, Hindi, Greek, etc. names for my baby-to-be. Many of the names in this book I can't even pronounce, and are not exactly what I'm looking for when choosing a name. Googling baby names on the internet is more helpful than this book.

perfect for finding that right name

7 years after our first we are expecting and realized our old name book was a little outdated so we purchased this one. I love that in the front of the book it gives you different categories of names and lists of top names. It has definitely helped us in our search for a baby name - even though it's still undecided!

The chapters cover the National Security Council, the Departments of Defense and State, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Office of Management and Budget. The book also focuses on the roles of Congress, the Supreme Court, and outside players in the national security process like the media, think tanks, and lobbyists. Each chapter details the organizational culture and personality of these institutions so that readers can better understand the mindsets that drive these organizations and their roles in the policy process.

Many of the contributors to this volume are long-time practitioners who have spent most of their careers working for these organizations. As such, they offer unique insights into how diplomats, military officers, civilian analysts, spies, and law enforcement officials are distinct breeds of policymakers and political actors. To illustrate how different agencies can behave in the face of a common challenge, contributors reflect in detail on their respective agency's behavior during the Iraq War.

This impressive volume is suitable for academic studies at both the undergraduate and graduate level; ideal for U.S. government, military, and national security training programs; and useful for practitioners and specialists in national security studies.

About the Author
Roger Z. George teaches national security policymaking at Georgetown University and the National War College. He has also worked at the CIA, National Intelligence Council, the State Department's Policy Planning Staff, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Harvey Rishikof is a professor of law and national security studies at the National War College and the chair of the American Bar Association Standing Committee on law and national security. He has served as legal counsel to the deputy director of the FBI, as a federal appellate law clerk, and as administrative assistant to the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

An all encompassing treatment of national security institutions and processes

These two editors, Roger George and Harvey Rishikof, and have collected and organized a set of essays that address the current mix of key players and institutions which work, or don't work, to advance our nation's security. Understand the "labyrinth", as they term this process, is what I ask my graduate students to do, with some subtlety and intellectual dexterity. They could not do it without this book, which is not just for formal classes, but a pleasure to read and study on its own merit. Americans are abysmally ignorant of these institutions and actors. This book goes a very long way to remedy that reality. I have adopted it for my courses at American Military University.

Started as an assignment, turned into a great read

Well written break-down of several of the nations agencies and positions which make up the National Security Enterprise. A good history lesson is provided with all the agencies, as well as the key players that influenced them. All work is well cited and the author's make some real good suggestions on the way things should move forward in terms of National Security. Kindle version is great have had no issues.

One of the best books I have read on understanding the National Security Apparatus. You will not be disappointed if you are looking for a comprehensive overview. This book is a series of selected essays by different subject matter experts involved in various NS Agencies. I bought this book after taking a class in the subject (book was used in our class), just so I could add it to my library. Excellent reference book.

Surya Santoso, Ph.D., is a senior power systems engineer at Electrodek Concepts, Inc. His primary interests involve modeling of transients and harmonic phenomena and development of intelligent systems algorithms for power quality data analysis. Santoso is a senior member of the IEEE

Mark F. McGranaghan is vice president of sales and marketing for Electrodek Concepts, Inc. He has BSEE and MSEE degrees from the University of Toledo and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. McGrahaghan was vice chairman of the IEEE SCC 22 Power Quality Standards Coordinating Committee and a technical advisor for the IEC SC77A (International Power Quality Standards).

Roger C. Dugan is a senior consultant with Electrodek Concepts, Inc. He has a BSEE degree from Ohio University and an ME degree in electric power engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Dugan has nearly 40 years’ experience in electric power quality and distribution system analysis. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his work in harmonics and transients.

H. Wayne Beaty is the former managing editor of Electric Light and Power and editor of McGraw-Hill's Standard Handbook of Electrical Engineering, Thirteenth Edition.

Practical and enlighting. Take the mystery out of Power Quality.

Most books on power engineering related subjects have not been very helpful in my experience. The typical text being heavy on theory and math or just too generic to be of use. This book was a plesent suprise on being both educational and yet very practical. Now I feel much more comfortable in analizing and troubleshoot power quality issues in our plant and can explain the concepts to others. Expereince is what makes a master and this book will give you the tools to start in that direction. If you have a need to be working on power quality issues or just want to understand power quality better then this book is for you.

Good book!

I checked out an earlier edition of this book (light blue colored cover) from the school library and really enjoyed it. It introduced me to Utilities industry language describing indices of power distribution reliability (interruptions and outages), like SAIFI, SAIDI, and CAIDI.

Although I would have liked more detail on correcting reactive power (when unwanted) I still thought the presentation was clear and cogent. I would recommend this book to the student or anyone interested in power system quality. I'll put it in my Wish List.

About the Author
Kevin Kelly is Senior Maverick at Wired magazine. He co-founded Wired in 1993, and served as its Executive Editor from its inception until 1999. He is editor and publisher of the Cool Tools website, which gets half a million unique visitors per month. From 1984-1990 Kelly was publisher and editor of the Whole Earth Review, a journal of unorthodox technical news. He co-founded the ongoing Hackers' Conference, and was involved with the launch of the WELL, a pioneering online service started in 1985. His last book, What Technology Wants (Viking/Penguin October 18, 2010), asserted that technology as a whole is not just a jumble of wires and metal but a living, evolving organism that has its own unconscious needs and tendencies. He also authored the best-selling New Rules for the New Economy and the classic book on decentralized emergent systems, Out of Control.

Extraordinarily useful, endlessly fascinating

COOL TOOLS is a sprawling compilation of useful tool reviews that author Kevin Kelly and a thousand contributors wrote over a 10-year period on Kelly's blog of the same name. Every tool in this massive (472 pages, 11" x 14") collection was recommended by an avid tool user who actually used the tool. Every tool in COOL TOOLS is either the best, the cheapest, or the only thing that works.

As a former editor of Fine Homebuilding magazine, I thought I knew a bit about tools. Not anymore. Kelly and his crew have put together the most exhaustive, inventive and mind-bending selection of stuff I've ever seen. For starters, their definition of tools encompasses more or less every human activity on earth. So in addition to hand jacks that can raise 7000 lbs., the Teeny Turner (a pocket sized driver), portable band saws, and laser measuring tools, you can find the best source on how to buy a car cheaply, make a low-budget movies, brew your own beer, rear an optimistic child, design a logo, win a fight, soak in feral (!) hot springs, learn to swim efficiently, prepare for a natural disaster, vagabond the world, do something dangerous (and live to tell about it), run for local office and win, go solar on your roof, or (a great boon to Boomers) remember anything.

This list doesn't scratch the surface of what's in COOL TOOLS and that's one of the things that makes it so irresistible--you return to it again and again. Open it at random and you experience something like being six again, with a child's sense of delight and wonder at how clever people can be and what abundance this world holds. Cool Tools is cool

I still have a dozen or so Whole Earth Catalogs (WEC) from the last century. I visit author Kevin Kelly's Cool Tools site almost every day to see and read about the latest cool tools, and I could just afford this book, so I ordered it before it was published, and it has been open on my coffee table in my living room, ever since it arrived.

I page through it often and spend a lot of time reading about specific topics of interest to me - and I always learn new things - and even give attention to areas I'll probably never use.

It's a wish book and a daydream book and a down-and-dirty reality book. Nothing since the WEC has been as continually fascinating and educational. It reminds me of a New Age Sears Catalog of everything available - especially tools, which have always fascinated me.

I like that the book is easier to navigate than the site, which is still great for browsing, and though many of the tools reviewed are too esoteric for my direct use, it is still vastly interesting.

The type is a tad small. I keep wanting to command + it up to decent reading size for my elderly eyes, but I keep a bright lamp nearby for reading.

It's over-sized and heavy, and it's not comfortable reading closer to my eyes like most books. So I hunker down over it - maybe I should buy a podium desk, since they're listed along with everything else in the book. Or I might have given in five stars.

Tools you need to know about

If you ever enjoyed reading the Whole Earth Catalog, read no further. Just buy this. You know why.
If you are a reader of the Cool Tools blog, again, I'd say to just buy this. Yes, you've already read (or could read) much of the content on the site, but the book format (and the fact this is a hand-picked subset of the reviews from the blog) adds context and flow. You'll like curling up and paging through the oversize pages. Reviews within a category that were separated by months or years are side by side here in the book. QR codes take you directly to product pages. It is a nicely realized, physical thing.
Never heard of Cool Tools blog or the WEC? Check out the Cool Tools blog to get an idea of the tone (tell us about a cool tool, one that you'd recommend to a good friend) and subjects. This is a compilation of "cool tools"--tools that represent things you either never knew existed, or an extraordinary value. (The book itself qualifies as among the coolest of tools.)
The categories are wide ranging, from cooking, crafts, learning, music, family, electronics and more. There's certain to be some area of immediate interest, but half the fun is the insight into the tools of the trade of some activity you may never have considered like beekeeping or world travel on a shoestring budget.
There are some images with jarringly-low resolution, a few typos here and there, but overall a very nicely done book.
