Comments on Manual Usefulness

While this provides a lot of useful information, it does not quite make it as a "shop manual." For example, the electrical diagrams refer to "early" vs. "later" versions of certain tractor models, but it does not provide any indication by serial number or other identifying marks as to which is which, nor does it point out the very few circuit changes that could lead to more rapid identification. It would also be helpful if it reinforced the schematics with photographic representations of some of the special parts which are unique to these machines. The same can be said about most of the text. While it is helpful for disassembly and reassembly, it does not go into sufficient detail for troubleshooting, measurements to help with replacement or remachining of parts, etc., which can be frustrating when servicing older machines. This may be a necessary manual to obtain before servicing these machines, but it leaves too many questions unanswered.

Good manual

It's not a service manual but I knew it wouldn't be before I bought it. But it has a lot of info to keep everything running smooth. I saw other reviews complain about not being able to tell the difference between tractor models but I don't have a problem at all. If your not sure just look at your serial numbers. I bought this for my 855 and for the price the info and diagrams are suffice. If your looking for a complete break down of every part buy a shop manual for $150

A good resource if you are doing ground level servicing. It is not a high level maintanance and operators manual and therefore if you want just routine servicing guides and control descriptions this doesn't help much.

About the Author

Harold Bloom is a Sterling Professor of the Humanities at Yale University and a former Charles Eliot Norton Professor at Harvard. His more than thirty books include The Best Poems of the English Language, The Art of Reading Poetry, and The Book of J. He is a MacArthur Prize Fellow, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the recipient of many awards and honorary degrees, including the Academy’s Gold Medal for Belles Lettres and Criticism, the International Prize of Catalonia, and the Alfonso Reyes Prize of Mexico.

A Blooming Confusion

While Harold Bloom might be able to artfully expatiate upon the tragic flaws of various and sundry Shakespeare heroes, he commits one of his own here: he hasn't the faintest idea of his audience. Too sophisticated for a tyro and a mere introduction for anyone that attended sophomore English, Bloom commits the ultimate act of literary hamartia - which, staying true to the Aristotelian spirit of tragedy, he doesn't realize.

Bloom begins by noting that poetry is essentially figurative speech, going on to further note (smartly) that prosaic speech is figuration, too, but figuration whose immediacy as such as been lost. For a large portion of the volume, he reads several poems through the lens of Kenneth Burke's understanding of the four figurative tropes: irony, synecdoche, metonymy, and metaphor. Do you already know what these words mean? Assuming that you do (I'm guessing that most people who don't wouldn't know who Harold Bloom is), the vast majority of this book will be nothing new.

Bloom does manage to make some interesting points about the roles of allusion and intertextuality in poetry, giving examples of how some poems consciously mimic others stylistically (the scorn he heaps upon the "self-pitying and metrically maladroit" Poe is hilarious). He ends the book with the consideration that poetry is basically an exercise in which we encounter, in the words of Owen Barfield, "in contact with a different kind of consciousness from our own," which Bloom construes as a sort of cognitive "strangeness." This definition, while perhaps already glaringly obvious to the serious reader of poetry, has always rung true with me.

The strangeness of this book, however, is of quite another sort. We are offered interpretation after interpretation, without being offered even the rudimentary mechanics of how to "read a poem" suggested in the title, if such a mechanics are even available. Maybe his emphasis was on the "art" instead of the "reading poetry."

There is more in poetry than is dreamnt in his theory

Harold Bloom has an enormous love and an immense knowledge of poetry. His interpretative works show not only his tremendous knowledge but his great creative power in thought. This present small volume which is the introduction to a volume published last year the anthology 'The Best Poems of the English Language' I found a bit disappointing. Bloom opens by talking about poetry as figurative language, and then following Kenneth Burke in talking of the tropes which make up figurative language, irony, synecdoche, metonymy, and metaphor. And with this he sets the tone for an essay which is more an eclectic mishmash than it is an insightful look into the heart of reading poetry.

He goes on to talk about the importance of allusion in poetry, once again working with his most famous thesis of new poets rivalry with, and their need to overcome their predecessors. He talks about the poetry of thought in Shakespeare, and gives nine poetic passages which illustrate the quality of ' poetic voice'. Toward the end of the volume he makes the general statement that poetry is essentially about expanding the consciousness.

I did not find all of this particularly useful in helping me understand how to better read poetry. It seems to me that if Bloom had been true to the title of the work he should have done in this small volume a lot more close reading. And he should have done this about poems which are relatively ' easy' and ' well- known'. And he should too have said something about certain practical steps( for example the importance of memorizing poetry in order to truly make it one's own. The experience of 'knowing and reciting poetry' enhances the art of reading as Bloom himself the memorizer of volumes of poetry well knows).

It seems to me too that in this volume Bloom technically straitjackets ' poetry'. Consider for instance the difference between reading the poetry of the Psalms, and reading the poetry of Shakespeare. Consider the difference between reading the poetry of Wordsworth and reading the poetry of Emily Dickinson. There are not simply enormous differences in the content, message, meaning of the poetry but enormous differences in the means of expression and their intent. To read a poet is to somehow feel inside another world. Reading poetry requires above all a kind of emotional empathy that Bloom does not talk about at all. Poetry is after all the deepest way we have of expressing feelings with words. Bloom somehow in this particular work is not interested in that dimension.

I also think that Bloom erred in not thinking at all about the way 'poetry ' is ' food for the soul'. I have just been reading Akhmatova and considering the way she was a ' voice for the suffering Russian people' a source of consolation and hope to so many . Poetry I want to say gives a kind of sustenance to mind, heart, and soul. And it is a gift many readers do not know how to appreciate and enjoy, even intelligent readers.

I do not believe that this particular work will help those readers very much.

And this again when I have enormous respect for Harold Bloom one of the great readers of poetry in our time.

not a bargain by any standard

I was extremely irked to learn soon after purchasing this book that this is the stand-alone version of the introduction to Bloom's anthology "The Best Poems in the English Language". For scarcely more than twice the price, you may purchase the much-longer anthology. I'm kicking myself.

About the Author
Diane Larsen-Freeman is Professor Emerita of Education, Professor Emerita of Linguistics, and Former Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also a Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Dr. Larsen-Freeman has been a conference speaker in over 60 countries of the world and has published over 100 articles in her areas of interest. Her Heinle/Cengage titles include "The Grammar Book: Form, Meaning, and Use for English Language Teachers" (third edition, 2015, co-authored with Marianne Celce-Murcia), "From Grammar to Grammaring" (2003, authored), and the fourth edition of "Grammar Dimensions: Form, Meaning, and Use" (2007, Series Director). From 1980-1985, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was Editor of the journal "Language Learning." In 1997, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. About the Author

Andrew Simpson was born and raised in Scotland and travelled around the world several times before settling in Canada and finding his calling as a professional animal trainer for the film industry. His current project is working in China with internationally acclaimed director Jean-Jacques Annaud (The Name of the Rose, Seven Years in Tibet and Enemy at the Gates) on the highly anticipated film adaptation of the Chinese novel Wolf Totem, by Jiang Rong.

Something wonderful.

First of all, this is a review of the book not the documentary, and this is an important aspect of the review of this making of book. This book is meant to compliment the documentary film, which is the animal trainers point of view while making the film called LOUP.

Nicolas Vaniers film Loup was made in 2009, but the making of doco and book has only now appeared and the book is truely something wonderful. Animal trainers are part of the hidden talent in any animal themed film, and their work in this film was exceptional. In fact the animal photography in the film itself recalls the best of the old disney animal themed productions of the past. The wolves in this film were bred and raised from birth and the trust they had made it possible for them to perform exceptional stunts in this production. The young characters in the film had to perform in some dangerous situations and display some extraordinary scenes with the wolves, and it was only through the patience and involvement of Andrew Simpson that this vision was acomplished. The book itself is full of amazing production photographs and the author has written a short but well detailed text outlining the difficulties involved in achieving some of the films amazing moments. But it is the wolves themselves that steal the show, displaying the wonderful instincts that wild animals have with true emotion on display and with the most minimal amount of anthropomorphic input from the humans around them. The photographs are a mixture of production pictures and shots of the wolves preparing for the intricate scenes. Many other wonderful pictures show the wolves running free in between scenes and behaving just like wild wolves would.

Overall this is a wonderful making of movie book and I look forward to seeing the documentary that it accompanies, but to appreciate the efforts it depicts, I would urge anyone who enjoys wildlife adventure films, similar to Caroll Ballards' Never Cry Wolf (1983), to seek out Nicolas Vaniers' extraordinary feature film.

The is a review of the DOCUMENTARY, not the book

Andrew Simpson is one of the most renowned animal trainers in the movie industry, focusing in particular on wolves. In 2009, he was invited to have his pack of wolves (two dozen in total) participate in a French movie called "Loup", what later became known as "the biggest wolf film ever made". Simpson documented the entire experience and from that there are now both a documentary and a table book. This is a review of the documentary, NOT the book.

In "Wolves Unleashed" (2012 release from Canada; 89 min.), we see how Andrew Simpson and his crew cares for the wolves, and in particular how Simpson establishes a deep and personal bond with each of the wolves, truly as if they are his children. Much of the movie is shot is Siberia, and it was with an open mouth as I watched the entire movie crew tyring to cope with the unbearable weather conditions of winter in Siberia (-60C at one point!). The scenes with the wolves are amazing, as Simpson has to set things up, amid dangerous conditions AND unexpected last minute plot changes. In all of this, the trust between Simpson and his wolves is paramount. At one point in the movie Simpson has to "trick" one of his wolves to jump onto the frozen surface of a lake, only in reality a hole has been cut and the wolf will jump into the freezing water. It just breaks Simpson's heart to have to "lie" to his wolf, and upon completion of the scene, he keeps telling the wolf how he'll try and make it up to him. Other equally interesting parts of the movie are the incredible logistical challenges to get the wolves transported back and forth between Canada and Russia.

In all, I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary from start to finish. I caught this movie at the Cincinnati Film Festival here last month, and I can only hope that it will find a wider audience eventually, if not in the theatres, then certainly on a DVD/Blu-Ray release. From the looks of the listing on Amazon, the same-titled book appears to be a high-quality table book, which I may check out as well. Meanwhile, the documentary "Wolves Unleashed" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This is truly an amazing book that has outstanding photography, as well as a very detailed story of one man's journey to make the biggest Wolf film ever made. Andrew Simpson and his team traveled to a remote part of Russia to make a French Film called "Loup". This book explains the challenges and the triumphs they all faced including the pack or trained Wolves they took with them. I understand there is a documentary that has been shown at certain film festivals around the world. If the movie is anything like the book I cannot wait to see it. If you are an animal or wildlife lover you will love this book. It opens a door into a world of a very miss understood animal and shows an unbreakable bond between man and beast.

Lost 4.8 kilos in 13 days, was 96 now 91.2) Excellent approach to weight loss and more importantly sustained weight loss. The first thing you need to do is get your head cleared of all the guilt inducing advertising about fat that has dominated the weight loss industry for 40 years or more and the whispering from family and friends. This diet will kick start your diet and body shape change. Bear in mind that this diet is as much about eating dark green leafy vegetables as fat and most importantly avoiding processed crap. Hunger pangs are kept to a minimum and with a little organization (properly stocked fridge and food presses) it's much easier to sustain. I will start to re-introduce some good quality carbs e.g. oat bran, brown rice and root vegetables but no more processed junk (especially "low fat" nonsense).

I am not a gourmet

It will seem like I am picking on this author, but I am not. I am sure she is a talented and knowledgeable author, and her advice is sound. I am a believer in HFLC already. I am just tired of buying HFLC recipe books that have food items/ingredients, on every page--maybe every paragraph--of which I have no knowledge of those items. I am a busy professional and I really do not want to learn how to become a gourmet in the kitchen. For example, on the first recipe page; crudites, creme fraiche, spring onions (as opposed to fall?), Emmental or Gruyere Cheese. I am dead in the water at the beginning without some time-consuming research (I am not a good cook either). I have never seen these items in Publix, and I have no idea where I would go to find them. Metric vs. Imperial is fine for me because I can convert in my head, but most Americans will have trouble with that. Further, I see where this is going. I am single. Lets say I give up my hourly worth to hunt down and buy these items. After I use them one time, the rest at some point will have to go into the garbage because I am out buying more ingredients that will be used once before the balance becomes garbage. Somebody MUST write a HFLC recipe book that even the minions can follow without wasting scores of dollars on ingredients that will never get used in time to be useful. Storage suggestions would probably help along with a glossary. Keep in mind that many of us are not feeding a family.

I am not perhaps terribly drawn to Testino's often conventional, clean, almost digital looking commercial work but do not be deceived - what he does other than for commercial gain is nothing less than stunning.

All his books are a must each in their own way, even including his mini kids' portraits book, but Mario De Janeiro Testino is perhaps his finest. Clearly personal, often sexual but always technically & artistically extremely interesting... perhaps above all... beautiful. Quite simply an essential purchase for photographers or photography fans.

Great and indispensable book; needs better kindle editing

I agree with all the positive comments from other reviewers. This book explains the "whys" in ways that are logical, methodical, culinarily and scientifically relevant, such that the answers simply make sense. (e.g., explaining the difference between brown and white meat physiologically first, which makes it easy to understand why cooking them optimally requires different approach / temperature / duration, etc).

However, I'm disappointed by the kindle edition:

- It has no navigable Table of Content. Yes, there's a linking ToC at the beginning of the book, but you can't access individual chapters by going through Kindle's "Go To" menu.

- The book cross-references itself by page number, which is useless in the kindle edition. I wish the references were hyperlinked to the proper locations. Alternatively, Amazon can implement the new page number feature.

- The editing for kindle needs some fine tuning. The kindle edition embeds page number directly in the text, but not always sensibly:

"... the amino-acid content and there192 fish and shellfish fore [sic] taste intensity of fish varies according to the waters they're caught in."

- The placement / flows of sidebars don't always make sense on kindle. Sometimes you'll be in a new section and then encounter a block of text that seems to referring to the content in previous or next section. I suppose this is a limitation of kindle's small screen.

As a scientist myself, and as someone else enjoys cooking, this book has a special place in my heart. It has an insightful dabbling of history, science, and the culinary arts that make reading this a true please. Make no mistake, this is not a cookbook, but is more like a textbook that might be used in a class titled "Intro to Cooking." It is a history and scientific approach to cooking. There is chemistry, biology, and physics in here, sprinkled with a dash of history and a pinch of fun. If you go into this expecting a traditional cookbook you will be disappointed, but if you understand that you're buying a textbook here, you'll really enjoy it.

I purchased this book for a course I took last semester. It is incredibly interesting. It's packed with information, but it never delivers it in a dull way. I find myself learning new things all the time as I peek into this book, and it has improved my confidence in the kitchen, as I have a better understanding of "WHY" things do what they do, or foods react to certain things, or change at certain temperatures, etc.
Great book that I return to again and again. The layout is excellent, and well organized. The index is stellar. This isn't the first effort or edition, and thus it is honed to precision, and delivers facts in an engaging way.
