About the Author
Charles Dickens's early childhood was happy until his father was imprisoned for debt. The 12-year-old Dickens then began working ten-hour days in a boot-blacking factory pasting labels on the jars of thick polish. The shocking conditions of the factory made a profound impression on him. His anger at his situation and at the conditions endured by working-class people became major themes in his fiction.

Excellent, but not complete

The 36 pages of the free Kindle edition contain Dickens' riveting account of the wreck and aftermath. However, not included here are the collaborative bits (stories related by the castaways to ease their ordeal.) These were part of the original book, and were contributed by Wilkie Collins and other contemporaries of Charles Dickens. I was disappointed that these "stories within the story" were omitted.

A short story that takes one immediately into the location and the lives of the characters. Loved it but SOOOO wanted to know what the future held for everyone.

About the End of the Story....

SPOILER ALERT - The online version of this otherwise very good story that I and seemingly others have read ends with the lifeboats still lost at sea. There is a version of the story in Dickens' published "Christmas Stories" book that I am getting from the library to compare, but in doing some searching, it appears that there is nothing further about the end of the story available.

However, at the outset of the story, the narrator says that he is writing in 1856, and later says the voyage took place in 1851. From that, one would conclude that at least both the Captain and the First Mate, who finishes the story, survived in some fashion. But it does seem odd that there is no further explanation of what happened in the end - Dickens generally gave very detailed endings to most of his stories. I wondered if one of the other authors who apparently worked on the story supplied the ending (several of the stories that Dickens wrote with others have been published later omitting the portions not written by him, which can be frustrating), but I have so far not been able to find anything further. It appears what the other authors may have written instead are the stories the passengers told each other after the shipwreck, which are omitted in the online version that I read. In any event, as mentioned above, from the cited dates in the story, it appears that at least some survived the ordeal.

This book is a MUST HAVE for all drummers!

You don't have to be a drummer to appreciate the beautiful photography and in-depth artist bios in "Sticks 'n' Skins", but if you ARE a drummer, you'll definitely want to own this book! Jules Follett and Jamie Pastor have done an outstanding job capturing the spirit of drummers of all styles, playing drums and the drumming community, in this book. There is also a section dedicated to photographer Lissa Wales, who the drumming community lost in 2005. Lissa was loved by everyone in the drumming community and her work is memorialized in a beautiful tribute at the front of the book.

"Sticks 'n' Skins" is chock full (over 500 pages!) of drummers and percussionists from around the world and every style of music, including legends and drumming stars such as Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker, Charlie Watts, Tre Cool, Tommy Lee, Simon Phillips, Joey Kramer, Jeff Porcaro, Jim Keltner, Chad Smith (to name only a few). It also includes behind the scenes photos from Drum Industry events such as PASIC, the Modern Drummer Festival, Montreal Drumfest, The 2008 Zildjian Drummers Achievement Awards and NAMM, as well as the movers and shakers within the Drum Industry. I received my copy in October and still haven't read it from cover to cover - there's just so much in it! You really need to own this book!

Photographer Jules Follett and her Fotos By Folletts team have captured the personality of over 500 drummers (I am truly honored to be a small part of this amazing accomplishment) Not only are there amazing photos by Jules and company, also included are legendary shots by the late Lissa Wales. (Lissa was very well known & loved in the drumming community and left us too soon) It's very special & touching that Jules has dedicated the opening pages to Lissa with a special tribute to her photos. Jules Follett has not only accomplished a task far beyond vision with this amazingly well crafted "coffee table book of drummers," but she has gracefully dedicated the entire work to the memory of yet another photographer whom she only knew as her Guardian Angel... Lissa Wales, and included a complete section with some of Lissa's special timeless moments with more keepers of time. Congratulations to Jules on an adventure well taken, and to all who are fortunate enough to spend time enjoying its blessed contents. Anyone who has even a hint of a drummer in your heart will surely treasure this historical work of art for years to come.

Like any good world almanac, The Cambridge Factfinder contains a ton of obscure information that you conceivably might need to know, but won't necessarily remember: the population of Iceland (268,000), the 1935 American League Most Valuable Player (Hank Greenberg, Detroit Tigers), and a chart of bones in the human body (there are 208 of them). It even includes a list of world championship trampoliners. The maps and other graphics are exceptional--much better than the ones appearing in similar volumes--and all measurements are helpfully listed in both metric and American units. It is an excellent all-purpose, single-volume reference book.

This book is similar to The New York Public Library Desk Reference combined with an almanac. Drawing from the database compiled for The Cambridge Encyclopedia [N 1 90], the editor has divided the work into such sections as the universe, environment, society, religion and mythology, communications, knowledge, and sports and games. A detailed table of contents leads the user to general overviews of a topic, while an excellent 124-page index refers to specific facts.

One excellent feature of the Factfinder that will be particularly useful in school and public libraries is the country-by-country discussion under "Human Geography." For each country, the editor provides the local name, transliterated into Roman characters where appropriate; the time zone relative to Greenwich Mean Time; area; population; status (democratic republic, republic, kingdom, etc.); languages; ethnic groups; religions; currency; gross domestic product expressed in U.S. dollars; and a list of heads of state and heads of government. An accompanying map shows major cities and rivers, and a small inset map locates the country on its continent.

Many other articles are no less detailed. Under natural history, for example, there is a detailed breakdown of the classification of animals and plants, giving the order and family name (in Latin), common name and examples, number of species, geographic distribution of the order, and its general characteristics. For plants as foodstuffs, including herbs and spices, the editor includes areas of cultivation, edible parts of the plant, as well as common and Latin names. A variety of sketches illustrate the work (e.g., human skeleton and reproductive systems, Christian religious vestments, British and U.S. road signs).

There are caveats for would-be purchasers. First, the orientation is British. For example, all temperatures are given in centigrade. There is, however, information on British organizations and institutions that may not be readily available elsewhere. Second, although maps are clearly drawn, they would benefit by the use of color, particularly those attempting to show physical features such as rainfall and temperature. The gray shading makes some maps difficult to decipher. Finally, unlike the NYPL Desk Reference, the Factfinder does not provide addresses. For example, although it lists the governing bodies in sport, it does not list their addresses. One advantage the Factfinder has over many almanacs is the clear, easy-to-read type.

Despite the shortcomings noted above, the Factfinder is a good reference tool, particularly for public and school libraries.

I truly loved this book

I truly loved this book. The Ava Delaney series is wonderful and I have grown very fond of the characters, especially Ava. I was hoping that Ava would finally find love and acceptance in this book and while things didn't go exactly they way that I had hope...there is still hope. I am looking forward to the next book.

I do enjoy Ms. Farrell's writing style. She adds details to her stories that many writers omit. I don't know if this is the last of the Ava Delaney series (I hope not), but if it is.....it was well done!
