The Really Awful Musicians, by John Manders

A wacky tall tale about how musicians first learned to play together.

All the musicians in the kingdom are so awful that the king sends his men-at-arms to round up musicians and feed them to the royal crocodiles. Pipe and drum player Piffaro heads for the border, collecting other refugee musicians on the way. Their jam session on the road is so bad that the horse pulling the wagon figures out a way to make them all play the same music at the same time—a system of lines and hoofprints. (In fact, there was a time before musical notation was devised, but that’s the only part of this story that is true!) Includes afterword.

bad music must go!
By Melissa Sack
The king has had it with his group of musicians. They sound awful together and he has decided that they must be thrown to the crocodiles! Music is also banned from the kingdom. Join this group of musicians as they set out on a quest to save themselves and end up bringing music back to the land! In the back of the book there is an authors note with information about the musical instruments introduced in the story. This would tie in nicely in a classroom during a music unit.

lots of fun to read with your kids
By F. Gibbons
My four-year-old twins LOVE this book. They've assigned us all instruments (son takes mandolin, daughter harp, Dad takes sackbutt, Mom has contrabass recorder), and they LOVE to "play" each part as it comes up in the book. Then for a grand finale, we all "play" together. Most of the fun is in making the instrument sounds, but it's definitely one-of-a-kind.

Great intro
By Deborah Lochner
This story has an introduction to different music terms, incorporated in the story. Great was to teach terms to kids.
