Airlifted into the heart of the Sierra Leone jungle in the midst of the bloody civil war in 2000, 26 elite operators from the secret British elite unit X Platoon were sent into combat against thousands of Sierra Leonean rebels.

Notorious for their brutality, the rebels were manned with captured UN armour, machine-guns and grenade-launchers, while the men of X Platoon were kitted with pitiful supplies of ammunition, malfunctioning rifles, and no body armour, grenades or heavy weapons.

Intended to last only 48 hours, the mission mutated into a 16-day siege against the rebels, as X Platoon were denied the back-up and air support they had been promised, and were forced to make their stand alone. The half-starved soldiers, surviving on bush tucker, fought with grenades made from old food-tins and defended themselves with barricades made of sharpened bamboo-sticks, tipped in poison given to them by local villagers.

About the Author
Steve Heaney joined the Parachute Regiment Juniors at 16, then passed Parachute Regiment selection and joined 3 PARA in 1987. Two years later he successfully undertook selection into X Platoon - the Pathfinders. He went on to serve with X Platoon, working with almost every allied Special Forces unit with which the British military has links. In 1999 he was promoted to Platoon Sergeant. He won the Commanding Officer's Commendation for finding arms caches in Northern Ireland. Sergeant Heaney left the British military in 2001, by which time he was the most experienced Military Parachutist in the British Army. He has spent the last decade working as a senior military adviser to one of Britain's key allies.

Damien Lewis has worked as a war and conflict reporter for major broadcasters, reporting from across Africa, South America, the Middle and Far East, and has won numerous awards for his journalism. In 2001 he wrote his first book, an international bestseller translated into over 30 languages, and adapted into a film and stage play. Pathfinders in action! Fantastic!

Terrific insight into the capabilities of the pathfinders who won the day with gritty determination, some skillful preparation and a lot of guts. I doubt many people are aware of the overall effect this made in quelling the rebellion in Sierra Leone. Really enjoyed this book.

It is rare that I find a book that I could not put down but this is one. In some ways it could have been written anytime in the last two hundred years.

A tiny force facing a massed enemy in unknown territory with a criticial mission. They need to scratch and scrounge their kit and enlist the help of local civilians to create a viable perimiter.

Unlike many books focused on small unit engagements there is ni long lead in with the central character's life story as a child padding it out. Basically it goes, "We were hanging around barracks in the UK and the boss turned up and told us to jump on the plane to Africa for a massive fight in the jungle."

Well written, nice bit of technical background on a special unit with the British Paras and utterly engaging.

If you like tactical military history and want to see how real professionals get a tough job done then read this book.

This book + Nevarez's Query Tuning & Optimization and you will be up to date

If you want to stay current with the newest technologies used in today's world to boost performance of SQL servers this is the book for you . Along with his previous book Query Tuning & Optimization, it covers everything essential there is to know on performance and you can rest assured there is nothing significant out there which you would be unaware of .

The two chapters which to me were the most useful were Chapter 2 - The Query Store and and Chapter 6 - SQL Server In-Memory Technologies. The advantage of Query Store over DMVs in finding expensive queries is that not every plan gets cached while all plans are stored in the Query Store, even incomplete queries. Live Query Statistics has already proved useful to us in finding where in the query the problem was.

Although we are still researching In-memory techniques as they apply to our environment, the whole section on implementing updatable columnstore indexes for running real-time analytical queries directly on the OLTP system was quite educational.

In addition, Chapter 8, Indexing, is an excellent 25-page presentation on why the knowledge of indexes is a sine qua non for improving performance.

The 196 page book is spread over 9 chapters. I will list the chapters below with a brief description of what's in each:

1. How SQL Server Works: This chapter is great as it starts from the beginning. The networking protocols used by SQL Server (TCP/IP, Named Pipes, VIA, etc.), ports, SQLOS, Schedulers/Workers, Query Optimization, Joins (Nested Loops, Hash, Merge), and Parallelism are among the wealth of information in this first chapter.
2. Analyzing Wait Statistics: Introduction to the Waits Performance Methodology. Retrieving wait statistics information via the DMVs and Extended Events.
3. The Query Store: How the query store can help, using it, performance troubleshooting and live query statistics.
4. SQL Server Configuration: This chapter talks about statistics updates, tempdb configuration, MAXDOP settings, IFI (instant file initialization), memory configurations, backup compression default, and a whole list of trace flags.
5. tempdb Troublshooting and Configuration: Structure of a page, different types of pages, tempdb latch contention, using multiple data files, what's new in SQL Server 2016, and monitoring disk space.
6. SQL Server In-Memory Technologies: In-Memory OLTP, what's new in SQL Server 2016 and memory-optimized tables.
7. Performance Troubleshooting: Performance counters, DMVs and DMFs, and SQL Trace / Extended Events
8. Indexing: How SQL Server uses indexes, where to use them, clustered/non-clustered/filtered indexes, and index maintenance.
9. SQL Server Storage: Different storage types, flash based storage, database configuration, database files, fragmentation, VLFs and using tools like Resource Monitor, Diskspd, SQLIOsim and different RAID configurations.

As you can read from the above brief chapter description, Mr. Nevarez put together a great book that should be part of any database professional's performance tuning library.

What I was looking for was an implementation or field guide for the practitioner. While this text promises to be "A complete guide to the models, tools, and techniques of organizational change" it lacks practical steps for implementing any of the several models it discusses, which was a big disappointment. It's best use would be as a good reference for a college level survey of the various styles and methods of the many change management models out there. If you want to hold forth on the relative merits of various change management models at your next social gathering, this is your text. If you're looking for nuts and bolts on how to actually implement and sustain a cultural change, look elsewhere.

an Indispensable Classic for Change Management Consultants

Undoubtedly, Mike and Esther made great efforts to consolidate and refine many change management schools of thought and practices in one classic text, in an amazingly comprehensive and structured way. I do highly recommend this reference to anybody (novice or expert) who wants to know more or work professionally in this highly complicated and convoluted area: Organizational Change Management. The appeal of this book lies in its comprehensiveness, as it provides the full landscape of change management, instead of advocating or supporting one school without regards for others. The theoretical part of the book is highly refined and illuminating. The practical part is illustrating, although it was a bit rambling for me. Things I would like the book to contain in future editions are:
- The role of mindfulness programs in improving individual change.
- the Spiral Dynamics model of change (Don Beck and Chris Cowan).
- Prosci change management methodologies (e.g. Prosci 3-steps change management process, ADKAR Model, etc.).

All in all, it is one of the most insightful books that I have ever read.

RICHARD E. BISCHKE, Ph.D., Chief Structural Geophysicist of SCA, has conducted a wide range of structural geology projects, seismic interpretation, and balancing studies in extensional, compressional, and strike-slip environments. About the Author

Peter Atkins is Fellow of Lincoln College, University of Oxford. He is the author of almost 60 books, which include the world-renowned textbook Physical Chemistry, now in its ninth edition. He has also written a number of books for a general readership, including Galileo's Finger: The Ten Great Ideas of Science, The Periodic Kingdom, Molecules, and The Laws of Thermodynamics: A Very Short Introduction. He has been a visiting professor in France, Israel, New Zealand, and China, and continues to lecture widely throughout the world.

I'd give this book 6 stars if amazon let me

This book is the perfect introduction into the world of Chemistry. It is well written and as easy to read as scientific prose gets. Atkins, a world renowned chemist, did an amazing job helping me visualize the molecular interactions constantly taking place in the nanoscale world. He made me wish I had studied more chemistry. The authors infectious love of the subject just seemed to flow out of the pages.

The book is divided into two sections. The first section focuses on the concepts of 1st year general chemistry. Most of the discussion is concerned about acid-base reactions. The second section of the book skims over the major areas of organic chemistry, giving the reader a broad overview the course.

Confusing elementary chemistry

The author has tried to present some fundamental chemical reaction mechanisms
while avoiding most chemical formulas and equations, choosing instead to describe
molecules bouncing around and electrons being sucked in and out. The descriptions are
supplemented by pictures of space-filling models of the reactants, and groups of other
molecular diagrams representing solvents interacting with the molecules. These latter I found
confusing.The approach works well for the simpler reactions : salt dissolving, precipitate forming,
acids and bases reacting etc. For more complex reactions, the descriptions are confusing.
There was one description I found very confusing. It purported to show how two SN2 reactions could occur sequentially on the same molecule with two umbrella inversions at the substituted carbon.
Starting with an alkyl chloride and a "longish carbon chain" . The diagram seemed to show a short
chain. The second reaction in the sequence apparently involved an -OH group on this "longish chain" which hadn't been mentioned before and didn't show in the diagram.
The synthesis of quinine was hard to follow, and the diagrams small and confusing.
Another thing I noticed which is no big deal - the name of the co-discoverer of the electrochemical production of aluminum(or aluminium) is misspelled in the text and the index.

Not for beginners

I'm sorry to disagree with the previous reviewer, but I found this book to be very difficult. At most I got a general impression of what was going on: it's all about exchanging electrons.

I would strongly suggest that the potential reader open up "Search inside this book" and look at Chapter 1. It is perfectly representative of the presentation throughout. If you are comfortable reading it--if you already know about electron clouds and ions, etc., and can read chemical notation--then you will be prepared to go along with the author. Otherwise, a simpler and more explanatory presentation will be more helpful.

I always trained hard in the gym, but my stomach muscles are never displayed, and so I did not have a 6 packs. I downloaded this book for fun, and was pleasantly surprised. In this book you will find many useful exercises for the abdominal muscles, which are accompanied by beautiful photos. In the book you will find the food recipes and diet. Using the tips that I have found in this book, in a short time I began to notice that the abdominal muscles have begun to appear, and I finally saw my package 6. Recommend this book by Adam for all who wants get Abs.

This book by Evgeny Patyaev shows the reader the reason most people do not have fabulous, abs is that they do not have the information that you will find in this quick reading book. This book will show you the two steps to a six pack. Along with the diet and lifestyle needed to give you the look that you are looking for. Well written and packed with the knowledge of what it takes to make the changes to give you the body that you have dreamed about. One of my favorite lines from the book. “Diet is like a chisel that helps mold your abs once you’ve started building them.” I have rated the book a solid 5 star rating and would enjoy reading more books by Evgeny Patyaev. One of the things that I liked best about this book was the exercises that were shown in the book.

Balance between nutition and exercises - here is the key

I'm no spring chicken in terms of real fitness, no bodybuilder or top-athlete either. And still, this book is applicable for girls as well as for the boys. This book emphasizes the balance between diet and exercise. Spending not more than 20 minutes a day, I can see first results. Some of the exercises can be performed at home, but for more results, I’ll recommend you to visit the proper gym.
Divided exercise accordingly to the three main abdominal regions: lower abs, obliques, and upper abs gives you the option to choose, what should or can be performed today, tomorrow.
This book gives a chance to maximize your performance and save additional time to other things.
